It’s officially been 6 years since I was diagnosed with Epilepsy ❤️‍🩹

Having epilepsy was something that I used to avoid telling people about because I never wanted to be looked at differently or treated as though I’m less capable. Over the past 6 months I’ve realized the importance of educating others and advocating for myself because Epilepsy is a chronic illness, meaning it’s never going to go away.

My seizures have been classified under two categories: Tonic Clonic and Focal seizures. During Tonic Clonic seizures I lose consciousness and control over my body, which causes convulsions. During Focal seizures I am conscious but typically starring off into space and my brain cannot process words, read, or write.

Epilepsy and the medications that come with it take a major toll on your brain and body. Depression, anxiety, extreme fatigue, brain fog, and memory loss are five major things that I struggle with. My brain and body need much more rest than the average person in order to stay healthy. These things really put life into perspective & make you realize that you take being healthy for granted. They can also cause you to grieve what life was like before the diagnosis.

Sudden death due to epilepsy (SUDEP) is a very real thing and unfortunately people pass away from seizures all the time. For people with Epilepsy, everyday is a gift. This can be a very scary thing to come to terms with. With that being said, it is important for everyone to know seizure first aid.

Seizure First Aid: If someone is having a seizure immediately get them on their side, make sure they can’t hit their head on anything, and call 911. This is EXTREMELY important because it can save someone’s life!!!!

I am SO lucky to have so many amazing people in my life that have supported me, checked in on me, and been there for me through the years! 💖💖 I want to continue to talk about my epilepsy journey rather than shy away from it because it’s a huge part of my life & I wouldn’t be where I am today without it! by @zeyasmemsss
