The future has always had a knack for hiding in plain sight—in a 450-square-foot Chelsea studio, say, or a bronze foundry in Milan, or a sun-drenched California hillside built by hand. This month, we went looking for it with our inaugural Rising Stars list, celebrating the next generation of interior designers, artists, architects, and makers changing the way we live. We found them everywhere—as we tend to. On our cover, designer William Cullum (@jwcullum)—a Thomas Jayne alum who recently launched his own firm—turns a classic Emery Roth studio into a jewel box of personal mythology (see: a @jodymorlock mural stitched with alligators and evil eyes and a gold-tiled bathroom channeling Diana Ross–era Chelsea). He shares it with his partner @jbrhodes00 and their cat Leopold, and not a single surface is wasted. Inside the issue, Milan-based artist @osannavisconti brings her bronze sorcery stateside for the first time. @communedesign builds a rugged, artisan-made hideaway in California. Designer @ruppstudio makes his Elle Decor debut inside an I.M. Pei landmark, and a new wave of private clubs proves that hospitality is having a big design moment. We also ask the important questions: Does a room have an age? What's the new frontier for natural stone? Can a dog bed be genuinely beautiful? (It can.) These are the names to know and the ideas already in motion. We see the future, and it looks very good. 🔮Tap the link in our bio to read our cover story. "It challenged me to push myself in ways I didn't think possible," says @nashmitarajiah of this newly built Athens home—her largest project to date at 23,500 square feet. The London-based designer worked from across an ocean, made roughly ten trips between continents, and flew a muralist in from England. It's June, the sun is out, and the pool house is the only room that matters until September. Whether yours is a full guest suite or a glorified changing room with good bones, there's always room to make it better. When a family bought an 1840s Federal brownstone in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill and hired ELLE Decor A-listers @markcunninghaminc and @gilschaferthearchitect to restore it, they came with one clear condition: the house had been largely itself for 185 years, and they wanted it to stay that way. From the archive: "I am repelled by decorator rooms," Istvan Francer told us back in 2009. The designer's Connecticut farmhouse—a 1740 white-clapboard structure in Litchfield County—was his rebuttal. Underground and underwater at once—that was the goal. Architect @peterpennoyerarchitects excavated one end of a Bridgehampton basement entirely, opening it to a sunken mosaic courtyard with a custom bronze fountain. Designer @katieridderinc carried the Roman undersea theme inside: bas-relief coral on blue plaster walls, hand-smashed terrazzo underfoot, a jungle mural shimmering in silver leaf down the hall. @julia.cancilla takes us inside at the link in our bio. A Cobble Hill brownstone built in the 1840s doesn't need much help looking good, but it does need the right people to know what to leave alone. When a Manhattan couple decided to trade their Noho loft for a family home in Brooklyn, they turned to ELLE Decor A-list designer @markcunninghaminc and architect @gilschaferthearchitect to restore the Federal-era house without stripping it of the character that drew them there in the first place. When a Bridgehampton family asked @peterpennoyerarchitects and designer @katieridderinc to transform their unused basement into something special, they gave one instruction: “surprise us.” The finished grotto—part Roman undersea dreamscape, part jungle cinema, part craft sanctuary—is exactly that. Mosaics, bas-relief plasterwork, silver-leafed murals, hand-smashed terrazzo, a sensory deprivation tank. “There’s no sense when you go down there that you’re in a basement,” Ridder says. “You’re constantly surprised.” At the link in our bio, @julia.cancilla takes us inside. As the granddaughter of Elsa Schiaparelli—the boundary-pushing fashion designer who brought surrealism into the wardrobe and hosted some of the most storied salons in Paris—actress @marisaberensonofficial was raised in rooms where art, fashion, and entertaining converged. From that townhouse to her own richly decorated Marrakech residence, her world has been defined by objects with meaning and spaces that evolve over time. Her Zara Home debut distills that sensibility into a collection that feels both personal and accessible, shaped by symbolism, texture, and a distinct point of view on how a home should feel. Production designer @vermettedanny found himself in a rare quandary on the set of @a24’s surrealist horror film ‘Backrooms’: He had to translate the look and feel of a series of YouTube shorts made by a teenager into a full theatrical feature. Through a combination of precise planning and last-minute mad dashes, Vermette and the film’s director, @kanepixels (who, now at the ripe old age of 20, also made the original shorts) turned the shorts’ infinite liminal space into reality across four soundstages.
