We are happy to announce Ding Zhi’s (b. 1992, Jiujiang, Jiangxi, China) solo exhibition at Capsule, 𝙃𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙮, showcasing a selection of her recent paintings on canvas.

@zhidingart
.
The works center on a recurring default figure, “Xiao Ming,” depicting how individuals navigate, negotiate, and continue to act within a system not designed for them, yet one in which they are compelled to participate.
.
Drawing on the familiar and direct visual languages of children’s books, lianhuanhua, and popular media, the works position “cuteness” within a complex and distinctly contemporary mode of perception: beneath a surface of intimacy and low threat, power relations remain in constant flux, while emotional orientation remains unresolved.

‘Chana Star 5: Tiny Tiny Hate’ depicts the moment when the illusion is about to end. The character’s tiger costume has already been pulled halfway off the figure, revealing ordinary light-colored clothing underneath, while a beam of strong light catches him out from the darkness. In a panic, he raises a mask much smaller than his face in an attempt to conceal himself, while holding a pencil, ready to fight back. The mask cannot accomplish its concealment, and the pencil is no match for the force illuminating him, yet the figure still attempts to preserve a final measure of identity and dignity. At this point, it becomes difficult to say which layer of clothing conceals his complete and authentic self: borrowed bravado, exposed clothing, the undersized mask, and the defensive gesture together constitute this identity.

“Honey”, Ding Zhi’s (b. 1992, Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, China) first solo exhibition at the gallery, is on view @capsuleshanghai and features her recent oil paintings on canvas and wood. Drawing on the familiar and direct visual language of children’s picture books, comic strips, and popular media, the artist situates unassuming and relatable figures within narratives that remain unresolved.
.
Her protagonists carry out missions through observation, disguise, hiding, and pursuit, using crude yet temporarily effective props. Their actions are at once comic and earnest: sometimes compelled by circumstance, at other moments prompted by a voluntary entry into illusion and a desire to empower themselves.
.
Cuteness and absurdity, therefore, are no longer merely stylized elements, but portals into questions of identity, desire, and power dynamics. The works reveal how ordinary individuals navigate systems that were not designed for them, yet in which they must nevertheless participate. Rooted in her personal experiences, Ding’s paintings reflect the predicament, failures, self-contentment, and quiet resilience that accompany the search for one’s place in the world.
