After nearly a decade, I finally feel good about rapping again.
1. The mics were blah.
2. Had to raise my voice.
3. I’m glad I did.
Almost 10 years ago, I told myself I’d turn LA upside down for everything it put me through early in life (IYKYK). Monday night felt like the beginning of that shift.🙌🏽🙏🏾
Packed house. Crazy energy. I couldn’t even make it out the door after my set—spent the next hour shaking hands and exchanging info. And I ain’t even got started yet.

I post Whitney Houston clips all the time. I say “Mama Whitney” like it’s nothing. But I’ve never really told y’all why. I always said I’d share it one day.
Today is that day.
I was 3 years old, sitting Indian-style in Long Beach, California, after being abandoned in Los Angeles… left behind, confused, but too young to have the words for that.

Then I saw her.
Whitney. On TV.
Big afro, bright smile, riding on a motorcycle in the I’m Your Baby Tonight video.

Something shifted. I didn’t just see a pretty lady… I saw my mother. Not someone like my mother… my actual mother. Because in that moment, she looked so much like the woman who abandoned me. You couldn’t tell 3-year-old Zee that it wasn’t my mom on TV.

But unlike her, Whitney felt safe. Beautiful. Warm. Present. Magical.
She became my mother that day. I’ve claimed her ever since.

That may sound wild to some of y’all.
But when you grow up with deep loss and no answers, you find your own ways to survive.
Whitney became mine.

As I got older, people used to say, “You look like Whitney… before the drugs.”
I didn’t get it then, but now I do.
And even though I rap… not sing… I carry her spirit in my own artistry.
Polished and raw. Elegant and hood. Graceful and grounded.

So when y’all see me say “Mama Whitney”… please understand:
This ain’t about being a fan.

This is my testimony.
This is spiritual.
This is part of how I made it through.

She never knew me… but she held me.
And I will always love her for that.
