Between 1926 and 1975, Belle Vue Studio in Bradford, England, was the go-to place to commemorate weddings, anniversaries, births and family arrivals. Amongst the South Asians who moved to Bradford, young men would often have their portraits taken upon arrival to send to relatives back home. After the studio’s closure, thousands of images preserving these pivotal moments were rescued from destruction. Now, over 17,000 images are cared for in the Bradford Museum and Galleries Belle Vue Studio Archive. Hundreds of images, carefully curated by @znali, are now on view at his debut solo exhibition, Nisbet Road Tailor Shop for @Bradford_2025 until November 23rd, reflecting on the studio’s role in documenting the evolution and endearing characteristics of British Asian style in the first half of the 1970s. These images serve as a reminder that despite the adversities faced by immigrants arriving in and living through the turbulence of post-war Britain, the hardships of the era did not define them. Instead, the playful collision of styles we see in the photographs show a generation confidently embracing change, struggle and new horizons.Source: @znali via Bradford Museum & Galleries Belle Vue Studio Archive by @znali

Celebrating the opening of @znali’s debut solo exhibition that elevates the silenced histories of South Asian immigrants through their role in the evolution of the British textiles industries, Ali shares a poetic look into his grandmother's Lahore home, situated on the road that the exhibition takes its title from, ‘Nisbet Road Tailor Shop’ As part of the @bradford_2025 programme, Ali’s exhibition is an immersive recreation of South Asian tailors from a time when thousands of people moved to Bradford from India, Pakistan, and BangladeshOut of these tailors’ shops and textiles stores emerged a new type of style rooted in British Asian culture - a story told through objects, images, and textiles sourced from famous outlets such as Bombay Stores, archival pieces from Bradford’s Museums and Galleries, as well as original installations by the designer Tracing an existence rooted in dislocated ideas of home, this accompanying video features Ali’s grandmother over a voice note, through which she shares her affection for her grandson and her appreciation for spreading the Nisbet name ‘Nisbet Road Tailor Shop’ exhibition is showing at Loading Bay, Bradford City Centre from 1st - 23rd November 2025Director @znali @znali.coVideography @mujtabamanzoor @syedmushahid514 Narration Safia Nani by @znali

‘Nisbet Road’ is a street in Lahore my parents grew up on as neighbours and the home they left behind after their wedding to build a life together - and now the name of my debut solo exhibition ❤️ A playful attempt at a recreation of a South Asian tailors, this exhibition is dedicated to a community that built the textile mills of the north, the love and resilience with which they fostered a new sense of home and identity, and the beauty they left behind, as well as the legacy they continue to shape. A time when thousands of people moved to Bradford from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, out of these tailor shops and textiles stores emerged a new type of style, rooted in British Asian culture. Sourced from outlets such as Bombay Stores, archival pieces from Bradford’s Museums and Galleries, as well as original textile installations, the exhibition includes pieces that pay tribute to a part of Bradford’s diverse story as we know it today. I was raised in the north of England, and nothing feels more heartfelt and humbling to come back full circle and have the honour of celebrating stories so close to home.
