I’m really quite excited to share that my work, The Mystery of Volition, was selected as one of five award recipients worldwide in the 16th annual Art of Neuroscience (AoN) competition. Announced today in Amsterdam at AoN × NeuroNarratives symposium (Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience).

This work combines handmade textile folk-art traditions integral to my experience of home in Mississippi with physical objects and lessons emerging from my time in NYC pursuing my PhD in Neuroscience.

A woman sits among a field of flowers and chooses to pick just one. Why this one? Think of the thousands of electrical impulses and biological pulley systems orchestrating themselves to pull her hand through space toward that one flower. Where was the origin of her decision? How did the intention unfold inside of every sequential millimoment?

Science maps these motions and intentions, but their more elusive facets remain points of fascination and contention across several fields.

This work doesn’t attempt to answer any questions. It simply juxtaposes what science can map with the animal feeling of desire, choice, and existing as an agent. by @zoedishee
