I’m not a great dancer. I struggle to memorise the steps, and I’m not the most confident person in the room. Even now, there’s always a little voice in my head asking, “Do I really have what it takes?” But perhaps age teaches you something: if not now, then when? So I chose courage. I chose to stay curious. I chose to keep learning, to keep showing up, and to trust that maybe I can do it even when I don’t always believe in myself.

And here I am, on the stage again.

When I was four, I begged my mum to let me learn ballet simply because I loved Disney princesses and wanted to dress up like them.

I started ballet at four and danced continuously until I was sixteen, when I completed Grade 8.

Looking back, I realise that the self-doubt I have today isn’t new. I had plenty of it back then, too. There were times as a teenager when I wanted to give up. I didn’t do well in Grade 4, and at one point, my ballet teacher told me that I didn’t have what it takes. I believed her. I was discouraged and wanted to quit.
But my mum believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself. Instead of letting me give up, she found me another ballet teacher, someone who saw something in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself. I’m grateful she did. Because sometimes, all you need is someone to believe in you until you learn to believe in yourself.

And I still remember my late dad coming to Parents’ Day to watch me dance. He was the only dad in the ballet classroom. It must have been a little embarrassing for him, but that was how he showed his love and support by simply being there. Sometimes, when I left home for ballet, he would jokingly ask, 「去做芭蕾小子？」It was such a small, ordinary thing, but looking back, those little moments mean so much to me now. In fact, even now, whenever I’m on my way to ballet class, it sometimes feels like I can still hear him asking, 「去做芭蕾小子？」

I think that’s why ballet means so much more to me than just dance.
It taught me determination. It taught me resilience. It taught me that progress takes patience. And perhaps most importantly, it taught me to keep going even when I doubt myself.
