TRANS ELEGY
Or, the end of creation.

No tree frogs. No barramundi. No pelicans that eat the barramundi. No crocodiles.
No beautiful women. No prophets of femininity. No music. No dancing. No protest. No sex, or change.
No tender, strong men, who love women as their own flesh and blood.
No angels. No mystics. Nothing sacred anymore.
No dildos. No culture. No dawn, or dusk.
Never an in between. Only this and that. No or. No what ifs. No questions.
No brothers. No sisters. No siblings. And forget about mothers.
No butterflies, so no caterpillars. No new moon. No eclipse.
No scar tissue. Only wound, no healing. We died with the salve.
We are the cinders of imagination. A scorched invention.
Endangered species now extinct. Beautiful, disappeared bodies archived for research. Call it anthropology. “We can’t bring them back, but oh how they blazed across the earth.”

Zoe Terakes is an Australian actor and writer, born in Sydney in 2000 and raised with deep ties to their Cretan heritage, a lineage that would later shape some of their most personal work. They are nonbinary and transmasculine, using they/he pronouns, and carry themselves with a warmth and clarity that audiences consistently describe as rare.

Terakes never set out to become an actor. It was a grade eleven drama teacher who first saw something special in them and encouraged them toward an agent. At just seventeen, they made their screen debut in ABC’s Janet King, and while still completing high school, they starred in A View from the Bridge, earning two Sydney Theatre Awards and a Helpmann Award nomination.

That early promise blossomed into a career spanning stage and screen, including Belvoir and Melbourne Theatre Company, and screen roles in Wentworth, where they played Reb Keane, Ellie & Abbie, Nine Perfect Strangers, and the acclaimed A24 horror film Talk to Me.

Terakes made history in 2025 as the first openly transgender actor in a key MCU role, playing Jeri Blood in Disney+’s Ironheart, a milestone they embraced with pride, knowing trans youth would finally see themselves as heroes.

Alongside acting, Terakes has become a devoted advocate for transgender and LGBTQIA+ communities, speaking openly about their own journey, including navigating transition while working in a public industry.

In 2025, Terakes stepped fully into authorship with Eros: Queer Myths for Lovers, published by Hachette, a stunning short story collection that reclaims ancient Greek myths and restores the queerness long erased from them. Rooted in their Cretan ancestry, the book has been praised as tender, fierce, and unforgettable, and has taken them to writers’ festivals across the country.

Whether performing, writing, or advocating, Zoe Terakes moves through the world with honesty, courage, and heart. Their story is still unfolding, a life lived unapologetically, in service of truth, art and community, and it is one worth celebrating.
