sunday, june 7, 2009: we brought a very special boy home.

a boy who ran on an injured foot to a home that he barely knew because he could tell his sister needed help.

a boy who spent an entire summer at his mom’s side because she got hurt.

a boy who completely forgot everything he was doing because he became so enthralled by captain america: the first avenger.

a boy whose relentless anxiety in the car could only be soothed by shel silverstein reciting “peanut-butter sandwich”.

a boy that loved so hard he would eat people’s shoes so they couldn’t leave.

a boy so clever that he trained his family a hell of a lot better than we ever managed to train him.

a boy that got so freaked out seeing snow for the first time that he immediately dug up the yard until he found mud.

a boy who proudly destroyed every soft toy he ever got until a little stuffed pig with a santa hat stole his heart.

a boy that would play with a stinkbug for an hour without ever learning his lesson.

a boy who didn’t want to play with the other dogs at daycare because he liked the humans so much.

a boy so desperate to spend as much time with his people as possible that he forced himself to stay awake every night until he physically couldn’t keep his eyes open anymore.

a boy so desperate to spend as much time with his people as possible that he fought cancer for three years and never even thought of giving up.

a boy who filled our lives with snuggles, stinky breath, eye crusties, laughter, naps, kisses, car tantrums, coughing fits, and stolen socks.

a boy who was my best friend when i didn’t have anyone else.

sunday, june 7, 2026: that boy spent his last day surrounded by love.

and this morning he made his way across the rainbow bridge.

i used to get annoyed by constantly being told how much i look like my mom. but as i’ve grown older i realize how much of a compliment it is. my mother is so loved by so many people, she’s seen as smart, talented, compassionate, intense, silly, free-spirited, loving, kind, and beautiful by everyone who knows her. the idea that people see some of her in me gives me inspiration. i hope i can eventually have half as much impact on others lives as my mother does. even serving as a reflection of her is an honor. i love you mom <3 by @zoetheresafossen
