Research 1st Semester Project

OUT OF THE SHELL

Unlike humans, lobsters do not age in the same way. What makes us mortal, the gradual loss of telomerase, can be circumvented by the lobster through the process of moulting. Theoretically, it can continue to grow indefinitely, as long as it is able to shed its shell. This process is necessary because the old shell eventually becomes too small for the lobster to continue living and growing inside it.

I therefore associate the lobster with the idea of personal growth. My design explores the different stages of this transformation: the difficult and burdensome act of shedding the old shell, the remnants that are left behind, and the moment when the inside begins to break through the outer layer because the shell has become too tight. At the same time, subtle glimpses and hints reveal what lies beneath: The new self that is emerging.

Visually, my work aims to embody the process of freeing oneself from an “old shell” in order to grow beyond one’s previous self, let go of what no longer serves us, and remain strong and self-determined in the process.
