Had a great time chatting with Sean Salai for his piece in The Washington Times on “AI elves” and how shoppers are using AI to find gifts this season. Only a small part of our conversation made it into the final article, so here are a few additional thoughts from our chat:

• AI shopping isn’t magical — it’s compensating for a messy search ecosystem.
People are tired of infinite ads, sponsored recommendations, and influencer-driven noise. AI feels easier because it summarizes options quickly. But it’s far from perfect.
• Today’s “AI elves” are research assistants, not autonomous shoppers.
You still verify sizing, shipping, pricing, and inventory. The tools help you compare options, but they usually don’t handle the entire transaction (yet).
• Privacy will be a huge issue.
To use these tools well, people hand over sizes, budgets, ages, locations, interests, and sometimes even payment info. Most of these systems aren’t regulated at the level they should be.
• A big concern? Small businesses.
As hashtag#AI starts pulling from the same data sources that big brands already dominate, smaller companies get pushed even further out of the discovery process. Without real transparency, the gap widens.

AI is absolutely part of the future of shopping , but we need thoughtful standards, better transparency, and tools that don’t just amplify whoever already has the largest marketing budget. by @zolaystudio

In no particular order:
If there’s small objects near the subject, it blurs or removes the rest of them. (People over your shoulder, trees behind the foreground, doorknobs nearby, fences, that kind of thing)

Like lots of background removers, if you have curly or wispy hair, it’s not great at differentiating it from the background

Works great with portrait mode photos. Even better with photos from a pro camera.

Looks especially awesome if the subject is in focus behind something blurred.

It chops off a lot of the edges, leave room on all sides.

It struggles if there is a lot of the same color in the foreground and background. It struggles with low contrast backgrounds in general.

Scenery with hills looks great. Lakes look especially cool.

Macro photos look great: flowers, insects, etc

Any photo where there’s a flat lower third with a subject in front looks cool, too.

Holding the phone on the tips of your fingers seems to make the most interesting movements. Mine here are pretty lazy, holding with one hand, relying on wrist movement
