Most people can name their favorite soda brand. But a whole lot fewer can name who built their house. Stephanie McCarty has spent her career trying to change that, and it’s one of the many reasons she’s @BuilderMag's inaugural CMO of the year. Stephanie started as a journalist and later became @TaylorMorrisonHomes’s first CMO. Along the way she brought marketing in-house and got it a seat in the room where product decisions get made. She also showed buyers everything online, down to which direction a home faces. Then, her team helped bring back @ExtremeMakeoverHomeABC, put sparkling water in every faucet of a house, and pulled off one of the greatest April Fools jokes in homebuilding history. Yesterday at the Accelerate Summit by @NewHomeSource, she put it perfectly: “People should care who builds the house.” Thanks to her, more of them do. Congratulations, Stephanie. Pickleball courts don’t sell homes anymore. Neither does a bigger clubhouse. ⁣ ⁣ That was one of the loudest messages at Future Place 2026, and honestly, it’s overdue.⁣ ⁣ For years, master plans competed on who could build more: more pools, more courts, another golf course. Buyers now expect all of it. When 78% of builders are feeling negative about the market, “expected” isn’t going to get anyone off the fence.⁣ ⁣ The conversation is shifting toward something harder to build: a reason to belong. ⁣ ⁣ That starts with knowing who you’re building for. And that buyer is changing. Retirees and solo-root buyers made up 56% of Q2 shoppers, while demographic shifts are bringing multigenerational living, longevity and universal design further into the mainstream.⁣ ⁣ David O’Reilly of @howardhughesco said it best: “When people buy into The Woodlands, they’re not buying a home.
