Zonia Zena — INTERLUDE(S)

Zonia Zena is a visual artist and archivist born in Peru, based between Miami, Florida, and Lima, Peru. Trained in documentary photography, she now expands her practice into fine art, creating images that bridge observation and introspection. Her work explores memory, presence, and the personal landscapes shaped by migration and archives. A Fulbright recipient in Spain, she holds a BFA in Visual Arts (University of Florida) and an MLIS in Archives (University of Alabama). Her practice is evolving toward a deeper dialogue between biography, memory, and the sensorial world, weaving them into visual narratives that continually expand and shift. taken in Little Havana by @zoniazena

Featuring Miami-based Latinx visual artists of Peruvian descent, Diana Larrea and Zonia Zena, Finding One’s Ceremony returns to the ontological question of who-we-are. The exhibition takes as its conceptual framework the writings of Jamaican novelist, dramatist, and philosopher Sylvia Wynter, particularly The Ceremony Must Be Found: After Humanism (1984) and The Ceremony Found (2015). In these texts, Wynter calls for a rethinking of what it means to be human in the wake of postmodernity, postcolonialism, and ongoing planetary crisis. She argues that modern Western knowledge systems have overrepresented a singular, universalized figure of “Man,” rendering other ways of being human peripheral or illegible. Against this, Wynter insists on the urgency of finding a new ceremony, understood as a decolonial overturning: a paradigm of knowledge production grounded in the “gaze from below,” the perspective of otherness, and the lived experiences of those historically positioned outside dominant frames.

Situated in Miami, a city shaped by migration, diaspora, and layered cultural memory, this exhibition becomes a reclamation of presence. It foregrounds the Peruvian diasporic experience, asserting ancestrality and ritual as forms of embodied knowledge through which alternative ways of being human are enacted. The selection of images shifts the visual language traditionally used to represent ceremonial life by focusing on fragments, gestures, details, shadows, textures, faces, and masks, and by adopting a non-linear exhibition display that does not aim to simply record ritual, but to construct memory poetically. Seen in relation to one another, the works open a space for viewers to engage in practices of self-institution, inviting reflection on who-they-are through the formation of personal and collective myths. taken in Miami, Florida by @zoniazena

Meet the speakers of Finding One’s Ceremony: The Gathering ✨

This Saturday, WOPHA founder Aldeide Delgado (@aldeide_delgado) and art historian Carol Damian (@caroldamian20) will be in conversation with artists Diana Larrea (@parcialmentenublada) and Zonia Zena (@zoniazena), whose work is currently on view at Green Space Miami. Together, they will reflect on the exhibition and their shared exploration of memory, migration, and cultural continuity.

Expanding beyond the conversation, The Gathering brings together an immersive evening of performance, and film, featuring the Sumaq Tusuy dance activation by Lucía Morales (@luciamorales_ar) with live music and original arrangements by the Andean groups Kuyayky (@kuyaykyfnd) and Estampa Criolla de Peter Zegarra, alongside Warmikunaq Ruwaynin, a film screening curated by Diana Larrea with works by Peruvian women filmmakers.

📢 We are honored to invite you to Finding One’s Ceremony: The Gathering!

Join us for an evening that brings together artists, scholars, musicians, and filmmakers in a shared exploration of memory, identity, and cultural legacy. Through conversation, performance, and film, this program expands on the themes of “Finding One’s Ceremony”, creating space for reflection, exchange, and collective experience.

The evening will feature a panel with Diana Larrea (@parcialmentenublada), Zonia Zena (@zoniazena), Carol Damian (@caroldamian20), and Aldeide Delgado (@aldeide_delgado), a live dance activation by Lucía Morales (@luciamorales_art) with music by Kuyayky (@kuyaykyfnd) and Estampa Criolla de Peter Zegarra, and a film screening curated by Diana Larrea, including works by Peruvian women filmmakers.

The program also includes “Julia Se Revela”, a biographical documentary on Julia Chambi López, considered the first Andean and Peruvian woman photographer. Taking place on the anniversary of the founding of Jauja, the event adds another layer to its exploration of ceremony, history, and the persistence of Andean cultural memory.

Title: Interlude(s)

My practice engages with perception as something fluid rather than fixed. Through embroidery, I spend extended time with the image, responding slowly and intuitively. The stitched marks do not describe the landscape, but register my experience of observing it.

The rhythm of thread moving back and forth anchors the work in real time. Each stitch becomes a quiet trace of attention, subtle enough to resist immediate recognition. Installed in a window, the image exists in dialogue with reflection, light, and movement, shifting as the viewer moves.
The work does not ask to be fully understood. It asks for presence. In that pause, looking becomes a passage shaped by sensation, memory, and perception. taken in Miami, Florida by @zoniazena
