I love the simplicity and graphic quality of Berlin’s TV tower, sometimes imagining it as a disco ball, a wand, or a lighthouse. Working on the Hermès opening in in my hometown, I wanted to draw on the city’s own iconography, so I found a place for the tower in this painting, which covered the windows while the displays I designed were installed behind it.

I’ve always been drawn to the yellow of Berlin’s U-Bahn and the sense of movement and openness that the city’s many waterways bring — so it was a joy to see both come alive in the animated version of the painting I created for the opening of the Hermès store on Kurfürstendamm, a campaign that also included billboards across the city and the cover of the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

In the previous post you can see the window design I made for the same occasion.

I was delighted to be invited by Hermès to design the window displays for the opening of their store on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, my home town. I worked on the widows for their flagship store in Hong Kong in 2022, and am thrilled that I got the opportunity to collaborate with them again. Doing this project in the city I live made it especially exciting. This year’s theme is Venture Beyond.

Estelle Hoy and Zora Mann have produced an impactful and wistful consideration of the power of and relationships between silence, inspiration, loss, and heritage.

The writer and art critic Hoy composes a poetic and vivid description of an artist’s visit to her family’s seaside home, while the visual artist, Mann, punctuates the writing with etchings that articulate the world of prose. With elegant prose, Hoy describes the process of observation transmuting into an artistic work. With psychedelic imagery, Mann expresses the experience of the creative process, the confrontation with generational legacy, and the fall into disappointment.

Together, these two art forms build the world of the main character as she seeks inspiration.

Estelle Hoy is an art critic and writer based in Berlin.
