MEET THE ARTIST: ZOË SCHOONBROOD

Zoë Schoonbrood works with what usually disappears: the first line, the doubt, the attempt.
She does not stop when it becomes “right”, but when it is still in motion. The drawing remains
open. Her work consists of loose, searching lines, where color is not a filling but a field on raw
linen. Not a background, but a tension from which the line emerges. She introduces a second layer: a glass plate on which lines are drawn, equally raw, equally unresolved. These lines do not exist on the canvas itself, but above it. They cast their shadow onto the linen. What you see is never a single image, but a shift between line and shadow.
Depending on where the light falls, the work changes. The line doubles, distorts, disappears. The shadow becomes part of the drawing, sometimes stronger than the line itself. The body in her work is not a form, but an attempt. Arms are repeated, a back breaks off, a head is sometimes nothing more than a trace. An anatomical dance. The line searches and keeps searching.
Schoonbrood does not create images, but situations. No fixed compositions, but moments that reveal themselves differently each time.
What remains is not an endpoint, but a shifting image that never fully settles.

De ladenkast wacht.

Wie ooit in mijn keuken is geweest, heeft aan mijn bar gezeten.
En wie daar zat, kent ze: de letterladen aan de muur.
Kleine vakjes vol grote verhalen.

Het begon ooit in mijn studententijd in Antwerpen.
Met een gestolen — lege — kerstboom op de grote markt, en een gebrek aan geld voor ornamenten.

Dus vroeg ik iedereen die langskwam:
voel eens in je jaszak, je sjakosj.
Geef me iets wat je toch al met je meedraagt.

Een oude bibliotheekkaart.
Een berekening op een viltkaartje.
Een verloren sleutel.
De dingen die mensen blijkbaar altijd bij zich hebben.

Die boom werd een verzameling levens.
En dat idee is gebleven.

Vandaag hangt er boven mijn bar een nieuwe letterladenkast.
Antiek. Mooi. Met honderden lege vakjes.

Kom langs.
Ga zitten. Drink iets.
Steek je hand in je jas of tas.
En laat iets achter.

Samen vullen we de herinneringenladenkast.
Vakje per vakje.

Want wat we bij ons dragen, zegt soms meer dan wat we bewust kiezen mee te nemen.

Laat maar achter.
