It’s my third year in the art history department at Scripps College, but my first as tenure track Assistant Professor! Here’s me and Bob Ross on our first day of school this fall in our Scripps green and white 🍃

It’s been a busy time as we’ve been putting together “Pixel Palettes: 40 Years of Digital Art at Scripps,” an exhibition for the centennial of the college, co-curated with art prof Nancy Macko, who started the digital art program at Scripps in 1990, the year I was born. We open on Wednesday, October 21st!

Now, who is the windswept critter stealing the scene in the first photo, you ask? That’s Öcsi (UH-chee), Hungarian for “little brother,” who we adopted from @bichonfurkidsrescue less than a week before the semester started. Because I choose chaos! He is a Buckets doppelgänger in poohuahua (poodle-chihuahua) form and he and Bobby R are the best of friends.

Phew, that’s a lot of updates in one post! Social media is weird and I’m tired but it’s nice to share pics of dogs and art. Bonus slide of my fav assignment so far this semester. taken in Claremont, California by @zsvn

One Friday evening at @latitudechi, I found myself sitting on a couch, next to a dog named Bob Ross. An oversized flat file cabinet had been transformed into a colorful makeshift stage covered with a spread of items: keyboards, a Y2K iBook laptop, a Barbie doll sitting cross-legged on an inflatable chair, a theremin, and even a Nintendo DS.

What I didn’t know was that soon, I would be soothed by these items, all as sonic devices. At Emotional Tech Support, Soft Reset (duo @zsvn and @claravenice) lulled viewers into their highest selves through a Love Island-themed soundbath and meditation, followed by a tech customization workshop.

Western medicine has led us to believe that pain and illness are only real when they are visible. How many times has your doctor ordered an X ray, an MRI, or an ultrasound, only to tell you that nothing looks out of the ordinary, despite your body insisting otherwise? From diagnosis to insurance coverage, medicine relies on visual evidence. Seeing is believing.

But there is more to this adage. Seeing is believing, but feelings are truth. Welcome to Intuitive Imaging Industries, where our transformational products and services are based on the mantra Feeling is Believing TM. Our founder, holistic healer and businesswoman Dr. Fifi Robinson, developed the Intuitive Imaging InstrumentTM, the III (triple-eye), with the mission to make you feel seen inside and out. Like the third eye in Eastern spiritual practices, the III can see things you and I cannot.*

Dr. Robinson studied radiology with Dr. Wilhelm Röntgen, Jr. and completed an apprenticeship with Guy Coggins, inventor of the aura camera. Her groundbreaking technology utilizes Artificial Intelligence and a unique color algorithm to visualize your chronic pain, producing tangible results you can hold in your hand. The images you see here† recall the early days of radiography, when X rays (the X describing a mysterious natural force) were used artistically and metaphysically, thought to capture the depths of the mind, body, and soul.

Zsofi Valyi-Nagyis a scholar/practitioner of media art based in Los Angeles and Assistant
Professor of Art History at Scripps College, where she teaches modern and contemporary art and media
archaeology. She received her PhD in art history and her BA in visual arts from the University of Chicago.
She was selected for the inaugural cohort of Leonardo’s CripTech AI Lab, an incubator for disabled new
media artists who are critiquing and reimagining the relationship between disability and artificial
intelligence. In collaboration with theremin artist and producer Clara Venice, she cofounded the i<3files
collective and Soft Reset, a multisensory performance project exploring sound healing and wellness culture
through vintage synthesizers, electronic ambient sounds, and guided meditations that offer emotional tech
support for everyday situations. Zsofi has led artist workshops in retrocomputing (Kunsthalle Wien) and
using drawing machines called plotters to explore personal cartographies (the artist-run space Plot 田 in Los
Angeles). Her work has been supported by the Fulbright and Dedalus Foundations, DAAD, the Center for
Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and the Getty Research Institute. She has written for Artforum, Art

Is your battery chronically low, your storage almost full, and your desktop so cluttered you can no longer see your cute background? It might be time to give your devices––and your nervous system––a soft reset.

Join us for “Emotional Tech Support,” a public program led by our July AIR Zsofi Valyi-Nagy and thereminist, producer, and certified sound healer Clara Venice. Together, Zsofi and Clara are the Los-Angeles based Soft Reset, a collaborative audiovisual project offering a gentle, human-made alternative to algorithmic wellness audio. Their forthcoming EP, Sound Pools, features an ambient cover of Tate McRae’s “You Broke Me First” and a guided meditation based on the reality dating show “Love Island.”

This program has two parts; participants are welcome to attend one or both parts, as there will be an intermission. Part 1: Live Electronic Sound Bath for digital hoarders, overthinkers, synesthetes, misophoniacs, and anyone who has taken a breathwork class and wondered, “Am I doing something wrong?” Part 2: Build Your Emotional Support Device: an interactive workshop for rethinking your digital environment as a creative practice, considering how color palettes, custom icons, notification sounds, and small interface rituals can completely change the emotional experience of using technology. Participants should bring their own phones, tablets, and/or laptops (all operating systems welcome), and will leave with a customized device that soothes and softens the nervous system.

In “Feeling is Believing,” artist @zsvn takes on the medical-industrial complex’s obsession with visual proof. Drawing from years spent chasing diagnoses for chronic pain and illness, the project imagines the Intuitive Imaging Instrument (III): part TV infomercial, part radio ad, part fever dream where xerography, aura photography, and AI diagnostics promise to make invisible pain visible.
