New spots have become available for our Teacher Institute for Neuroscience & Society!

Designed for NYC middle school educators, this multi-day professional development workshop takes place over four Tuesday evenings in October and explores the intersection of neuroscience and climate change. Through interactive discussions, expert-led talks, and guided activities, participants engage with current neuroscience research and create new ways to bring workshop content into their classrooms.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a $400 stipend and 10 CTLE credits.

Visit our webpage to learn more and apply (link in bio). The application will close once all spots are filled.

This program is generously supported by the @danafoundation

Imagine yelling while trying to listen. That’s kind of what electric fish do when they scan their environs by emitting and detecting electric fields at the same time. Krista Perks, Salomon Muller, Nate Sawtell & team have discovered the mental circuitry that makes this feat possible, work that could help design AIs that learn better. @nature_the_journal

Which computer models of the brain best capture what an actual brain does? The Kriegeskorte Lab and colleagues are answering this question by forcing AIs to disagree with each other, using bespoke images. Join acclaimed playwright and Alan Kanzer Writer-in-Residence @sarah_ruhl_ for a closing conversation marking the end of her time at the Zuckerman Institute. She will be joined by longtime collaborator Kathy Chalfant, Obie Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated actress, and Daphna Shohamy, PhD, Kavli Professor of Brain Science, Director of @columbia’s @zuckermanbrain.

They will explore memory, the body and the theater, and the connections between storytelling, performance and the science of the mind. The conversation will consider what happens in the brain and body when we remember, and how our experiences shape the memories we carry with us. It will conclude with an audience Q&A.

🔬 Congratulations to Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute BRAINYAC graduates!

The Brain Research Apprenticeships in New York at Columbia (BRAINYAC) summer research program pairs high school students from partner programs in Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx with Columbia neuroscientists for hands-on lab experience, mentorship, and a front-row seat to discovery. The future of science is in good hands!

Special thanks to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the Pinkerton Foundation, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for supporting this program.

Memory is fundamental for our ability to learn, make decisions, and guide future behaviors. Of course, we don’t remember just any random assortment of past events; what the brain latches onto are the significant ones, which can update with time and experience. What determines such significance? And how does the brain flexibly assign meaning to memories, both old and new?

Join us for our next Stavros Niarchos Foundation Brain Insight Lecture: Finding Meaning in Memories on Wednesday, September 16, 6:30 PM (EST). Three experts will bridge computational and experimental neuroscience approaches across species to examine the role memory plays in our lives.

This lecture series is generously supported by the @snforg, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Congratulations, SNF! #humanityatthecore.

Where does curiosity come from? Neuroscientist Jennifer Bussell wants to know. She has discovered that mice, like us, seek out information that offers no external benefit. Her new @natureneuro research with colleagues links this desire for knowledge to certain cells in the brain's orbitofrontal cortex.

How do we create mental maps of the world? By having mice explore mazes in virtual reality, Eunji Kong, Erfan Zabeh, Attila Losonczy and co. have shed light on how the brain recognizes familiar and novel environments.
