i’ve been in the desert a lot, and not metaphorically. i’ve been physically in the desert. i’ve been in the desert and reading books and going swimming at the local pool and eating good food and fresh figs (have you ever had a fresh fig?), and indulging in the beauty and wonder of the material world. i’ve been interpreting in mandarin and once in spanish, and embarrassing myself and getting messy. i lost $20 in vegas then won it back—isn’t that life? you go into vegas with $20, and then if you leave vegas with that same $20, you say you came out on top, though really you’ve just broken even. but you are on top, because you’ve had the experiences that the poor fool who didn’t go to vegas didn’t have. you only need to go to vegas once to learn that lesson. life on earth is beautiful. life in my body with two feet in the sand. the inside of my head is a lovely place to visit, but nowhere i want to live. peep the boyfriend on slide 3. #california #vegas #valleyoffire #goats thanks @_ohhsteezy for the song discover by @zudlow

WHAT I’VE BEEN READING
I’ve been absent from the internets for a while, pouring most of my reclaimed time into reading. Here’s a quick update to let everyone know I’m still alive and here are the eight books i’ve managed to finish while I’ve been clocking record-low screen times.

1. Image/Music/Text
Renowned structuralist/linguist Roland Barthes delivers a sucker punch to assumed reality by dissecting all kinds of text forms. Read for a headache.

2. Midnight’s Children
Salman Rushdie weaves language, history, faith, and magical realism into a complicated fairy tale. You can never quite be sure where it’s going at any point, and if you are, it subverts your guesses.

3. Dracula
Bram Stoker’s genre-defining novel, the first of many vampire books in my future. (I’m starting a new study.)

4. Carmilla
The vampire novel that came before Dracula, highly sapphic themes and many tropes that predated Stoker. (Of course a man got the credit.)

5. Vampires, Burial, and Depth
Thinker Paul Barber takes apart the many legends that gave rise to the fictional vampire. Amazing exercise in critical thinking and clear-headed academic best practices.

6. Volume Ø
Literary journal, or Litmag. A collection of work from new authors.

7. Granta 164
British-published litmag, beautiful photographic illustrations and inserts, polished and developed essays/stories.

8. American Short Fiction
A third litmag, short stories from new and established authors. by @zudlow

I always frustrate people by asking “What’s the context?” before giving a translation. But interpreting into Mandarin is extremely context dependent! Here are five words you can use to express “more.”

👉 比 bǐ / comparing two things
👉 比較 bǐjiào / stating that one thing is more than an implied but unspoken second thing
👉 多點 duōdiǎn / add more of something
👉 多 duō / to increase the frequency or intensity of an action
👉 更多 / to add even more to an already large amount

When it comes to interpreting you can’t take anything for granted!
