We’re excited to announce that we received an LMCC 2026 Manhattan Arts Grant! 🎉✨

@lmcc’s Manhattan Arts Grants funds hundreds of Manhattan-based artists, arts groups, and community-focused organizations for the public presentation of arts activities in every neighborhood from Inwood to The Battery.

This grant will support a collaborative project between @tkhasanovaa, @zuma.mir and @davracollective, which explores the transatlantic extractivist legacies of cotton production through the questions of improvisation, sound and environment.

Support for Manhattan Arts Grants provided by @nyscouncilonthearts, @nyculture, @umez_dc and @howardgilmanfoundation.

Stay tuned for more!

📷 Zumrad Mirzalieva (@zuma.mir) uses photography to examine how gender shapes access to public space, challenging the invisible boundaries that define who belongs where.

Her ongoing series, Sartaroshxona (the Uzbek word for “barbershop”), takes viewers inside traditionally male-only spaces in Uzbekistan. By entering these environments as a woman, Mirzalieva questions long-established gender norms while drawing thoughtful parallels between men’s barbershops and women’s beauty salons, both of which serve as vital spaces for community. Through this comparison, Mirzalieva challenges rigid ideas of gender while highlighting the shared human need for belonging.

As traditional Uzbek barbershops disappear under the influence of globalisation and increasingly standardised Western aesthetics, Sartaroshxona also becomes an important act of cultural preservation. Mirzalieva’s work reminds us that documenting a place is never only about architecture or tradition; it is also about questioning who has the freedom to enter, who gets to tell its stories and whose perspective has historically been left outside the frame. Ultimately, the project challenges the entrenched gender dichotomy that shapes everyday life in Uzbekistan.

Excited to share the second half of our research trip with @majafowkes and @reuben.fowkes from @sava.uea. Nothing compares to being out in the field together and learning from the landscapes, infrastructures and shared conversations.

This research lab was made possible through the Connections Through Culture grant from @uzbritish and opened up new directions for our long-term research on the Syr Darya river. Can’t wait to share more! by @zuma.mir

Screening and Lecture | Tricontinental Imaginaries at the Tashkent Film Festival with Zumrad Mirzalieva
TOMORROW Wednesday March 26, 2026 at 7 PM

On the occasion of Saodat Ismailova’s (@saodat.ismailova) exhibition, Amanat, please join us for a lecture and the premiere screening of a new film by Zumrad Mirzalieva (@zuma.mir), one of Ismailova’s frequent collaborators. Building on Mirzalieva’s research into the Tashkent Film Festival of Asian, African and Latin American Cinema, this lecture examines a space imagined as a South–South collaboration yet shaped by Soviet geopolitical agendas. Drawing from Mirzalieva’s short film, Tashkent 58-88 (2026), and archival fragments—including footage, newsreels, letters and the festival’s programming logic—she explores how anti-imperial images circulated through an imperial system and what these tensions reveal about broader solidarity movements. In doing so, Mirzalieva attempts to develop a critical methodology for reading this archive and its consequences within contemporary cultural politics.

RSVP to rsvp@swissinstitute.net.

Ushbu loyiha biz jamoa sifatida olib borayotgan kengroq tadqiqotning bir qismidir. Bu Sirdaryo daryosiga bag‘ishlangan uzoq muddatli, immersiv ishdir.

Sirdaryo Markaziy Osiyodagi ikki asosiy daryodan biridir. Qirg‘iziston, Tojikiston, O‘zbekiston va Qozog‘iston hududlaridan oqib o‘tib, u mintaqaning qishloq xo‘jaligi, landshaftlari, ekotizimlari, biologik xilma-xilligi, siyosati va madaniy hayotini shakllantirgan hamda XX asrdagi ekologik o‘zgarishlarda muhim rol o‘ynagan.

Sirdaryoga bag‘ishlangan yaqinlashib kelayotgan nashrimiz dala tadqiqotlari, yangi badiiy ishlar, arxiv materiallari, shuningdek tadqiqotchilar va rassomlarning mulohazalarini birlashtiradi. Mayya va Ruben Fouks bilan ushbu kontekstda dastur o‘tkazish bizga bilimni sekin, hamkorlikda va fanlararo yondashuv asosida shakllantirish imkonini beradi.

Biz Translocal Institute for Contemporary Art muassislari Maja va Reuben Fowkes bilan hamkorligimizni e’lon qilishdan xursandmiz. Ular tomonidan olib borilayotgan “Sotsialistik Antropotsen” tadqiqoti natijalarini O‘zbekistonga olib kelish niyatidamiz.

@uzbritish va ularning Connection Through Culture dasturi ko‘magi bilan, joriy yilning aprel oyida DAVRA O‘zbekistonda besh kunlik tadqiqot intensivini tashkil etadi. Unda shuro davrining ekologik va infratuzilmaviy “keyingi hayoti” (afterlives) o‘rganiladi.

Taklif etilgan kichik guruh ishtirokchilari bilan birga, biz Shuro davridagi ekologik muhandislik, yer boyliklarini qazib olish va ekologik inqiroz ta’sirida shakllangan bir nechta joylarga safar qilamiz.
