Who knew corn husk could glow like this?

What most people would throw away is collected, dried, shaped, and turned into fairy lights by hand.

That’s the part we love about Indian craft.

It doesn’t always start in a studio.
Sometimes, it starts in a field.

And in the hands of the right artisans, even corn husk can become as beautiful as these fairy lights and something you can hang in your homes.

Handcrafted by the women artisans in Huveenahadagalli, 70kms from Hampi in Karnataka.

Our first international artist collaboration. 🇮🇳 × 🇯🇵

What happens when Japanese Balloon Origami meets India’s Tholu Bommalata?

Two very different craft traditions came together at Zwende to explore an idea neither had seen before — bringing the sculptural language of Japanese balloon origami into traditional Indian leather craft.

Over three intense days, five artists from Japan and five Indian artisans worked together at our Bangalore space, alongside Japanese artist Ken Okamuro, the Folkluru team and master artisan Sindhe Siva.

Paper. Leather. Sketches. Prototypes. Paint. Experimentation.

And eventually, two life-sized horses — a 6-foot leather horse created through Tholu Bommalata techniques, alongside Ken-san’s paper origami horse.

What makes this even more special is how quickly it came together. An idea sparked just two months ago, and suddenly our office had become a workshop where artists from Japan and India were creating side by side.

The two horses were then exhibited as part of Folkluru at Bangalore Design Week.

If the spirit of Navratri could be laid out on a table, it might look a little something like this. 🌈✨

A little garba.
A little golu.
A lot of colour.
And all the festive feels.

Let’s get festive.
More colour please, it’s Navratri by @zwendedesign
