Some paintings ask to be understood. Others simply ask to be felt. This is one of them. @zylvanriaan has mastered his art.

At first glance, the two figures seem inseparable, yet the more you look, the more you notice the tension between them. They occupy the same space without ever completely becoming one. Their faces dissolve into expressive brushwork, leaving identity behind and allowing emotion to take centre stage. It could be two lovers, siblings, friends, or even two sides of the same person.

The limited palette of charcoal blacks, warm earth tones, and soft whites creates a quiet intensity. There is no distraction from colour; every mark feels deliberate. The textured surface carries a sense of history, as though each layer records a memory, a conversation, or a scar that time has never quite erased.

What fascinates me most is the use of red. The bold vertical line cuts through the composition with purpose, while the smaller crosses quietly punctuate the canvas. They don’t demand an explanation. Instead, they encourage you to pause and consider what they might represent—moments of pain, hope, faith, loss, or simply the points in life that leave a lasting mark.

For me, the strength of this painting lies in what it doesn’t say. It never forces a narrative or offers easy answers. Every viewer brings something different to it, and in return, the work reveals something different each time you stand before it.

It’s a painting about connection, but also about individuality. About closeness, yet distance. About the invisible threads that shape our relationships and the quiet emotions that often speak louder than words.

Long after you’ve walked away, it lingers in your mind—and to me, that’s the mark of a truly successful work of art.

A fragmented yet unified portrait of feminine strength, where memory, emotion, and identity collide in layers of shadow and light. The work captures the many versions of ourselves that exist simultaneously—seen, hidden, remembered, and imagined.

My interpretation... Maybe I'll get some discount 😂

Balance II

Through his experimental process, @zylvanriaan challenges the way we perceive movement and time.

Working with unconventional materials such as used motor oil, charcoal, anthracite, and cobalt salts, he slows down fleeting moments, transforming motion into layered, almost vibrating compositions.

What first appears abstract gradually reveals structure, rhythm, and intention.
Each work becomes less a drawing and more a visual performance suspended in time.

Rooted in the idea that “the faster we move, the less we see the details,” his practice invites us to pause, look closer, and rediscover the depth hidden within the ordinary.
