I had the honor of speaking on the Woods family history at Darrell Woods’s funeral at Denlow Cemetery in Douglas County, Missouri. 🪦 I was fortunate to do research on our family history alongside my mom, grandmother, and the late great Herbert Woods.

The Woods family were among the first settlers to arrive in the area, and their story is woven into the story of this country. Our family’s roots reach all the way back to the American Revolution, through the Woods and Upshaw family, whose Revolutionary War veteran Leroy Upshaw stood among the founding generation. few highlights from what we found:

Isaac Jackson Woods (1790 to 1850) was a Tennessee frontiersman who served in the War of 1812, taking up arms to help drive the British from American soil. We were proud to confirm his service through separate documentation. Years later, in 1831, he made the roughly 500-mile journey by covered wagon from Tennessee to the Springfield, Missouri area, becoming one of the region’s earliest pioneers.

His son James S. Woods served in the Home Guard during the Civil War and gave his life for the Union. He was bushwhacked and killed around the very day the war came to a close, a sacrifice made even as peace was arriving.

James’s son John Sevier Woods enlisted at just 18. He served in Phelps Regiment of the Missouri Volunteer Infantry and fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge. He was taken prisoner by Confederate forces, endured illness, and made a daring escape from an Arkansas prison before returning home to build a respected life and raise many orphaned children, including his own younger brothers.

The family’s service to this country did not end with that generation. Jerry Woods and Ken Woods both served in the Vietnam War, carrying forward the same spirit of duty that has run through the Woods family for more than two centuries.

Great to gather with so many members of the Woods family to share our history and to remember Darrell, who recently passed, along with the many others in our family who have served and helped shape this nation. 🇺🇸 taken in Denlow, Missouri by @zzackwoods
