reflections on patriotism:

for most of my life the flag made me feel a stranger. Not because of the colours, but because of who tended to wave them: people quick to display a country and slow to serve it, who skip the queue, skip the maners, and speak badly to whoever is cleaning up after them.

lately I have wanted something else. Not pride in a birthplace, which is only luck, but a kind of patriotism that is closer to work: wanting a place to be better and accepting that you are part of the reason it isn’t yet.

tonight everyone is in red, I will watch with my family. It is my dad bday, and my gf, who is from far away, will see this country go wild for the first time.

people give so much feeling to ninety minutes they cannot influence at all, and so little to the small things we entirely control: letting a car in, being kind to a stranger, doing our part well…

What if that were the celebration too?
