Trinidad & Tobago Carnival 2024. Written on the Moko (nearly a year ago) is the word- 'Ceasefire' This was a beautiful display of solidarity for Palestine 🇵🇸 in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 Carnival is a powerful expression of resistance, joy, and the fight for freedom. Much of what we saw today in the scenes coming out of Palestine. The Moko Jumbie is seen as a protector and guardian who stands tall watching over the village to look out for any evil. 🫡💚 Long live Palestine. 🇨🇩HANDS OFF CONGO, STOP THE CONGO GEN0CIDE Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹 Mas 2025- K(c)ongo Dey @vulgar_fraction in collaboration with @iamthesignman @1000mokos Designer Robert Young @insideready : "Yes, Kongo, 'dey', but Kongo is here, now: in your cell phones, in the batteries of your electric cars.. Kongo has been here as long as our region's history of plantation economy and African chattel slavery where a third of those forced into involuntary servitude came from the Central African Region. As an, 'extraction', and as it relates to Trinidad and Tobago; the cultural retentions that linger in their wake are remembered in this culture as, Kongo'. And this is our way to recognize that Kongo might be 'over dey', but it continues to exist here in Trinidad; it seems invisible, but it's here in plain sight. Kongo is in the pepper we eat and the wining we do. It's in the rhymes we hold onto, to say at opportun moments, like, "One day, one day Kongo Tey."-= a longtime phrase, harking to the Kongo philosophy that there is a natural order to things, a cycle of death and rebirth; a pendulum that will swing back over time to restore balance and order. "Kongo Dey" is a mas that points =Kongo DEY. Kongo lives there and there. But where is there? "Dey" is necessarily ambiguous. When you see Vulgar Fraction, they will be pointing in many directions at once- towards the local and across the sea; to and through the physical world and to the spirit world. "Kongo Dey" suggests that to point to the conflict in contemporary Congo, we must also point to the Kongo within, hiding in plain sight. Dey and dey. It's a performance that cuts through the erasures of the media. The pun continues. In "Kongo Dey" I also hear Kongo day. The mas wil be a day to acknowledge the living presence of Kongo in Trinbagonian and Caribbean culture. It is veneration, mourning, and protest at once. We shall see Kongo dey and dey and day. Since the 1970s, T&T has hosted cultural and diplomatic exchanges with China, bringing troupes of Chinese acrobats to perform here, including stilt-walkers. This inspired early Moko Jumbie practitioners like Dexter Stewart from Newlands, Point Fortin. Yesterday, in celebration of the 220th anniversary of Chinese Arrival Day, #1000mokos and @littlejabstt shared handle stilts with kids to teach stilt-walking. This is a common type of stilts found not only in China but around the world in Europe, Mexico, and also Africa, when stilts were used to fish, pick fruits, herd sheep, cattle and also avoid dangers on the ground - snakes, sharp objects or floods. In many of these countries, stilts became part of their folk dances and performances.
