De Yard. Where it all began 'bout nine years ago. Look how much time pass, eh? And look how much change too. Happy twentieth anniversary to Alice Yard. That space in Woodbrook is a special place + time in our lives; where strangers 'come friends, and friends 'come family. For the #1000mokos project and the once-weekly 'Sticks in de Yard' sessions, that place is home. Alice Yard's work continues in Granderson Lab and we wishing twenty more years (and beyond!) of growing communities, passions, contemporary art and artists. Is ah Love! #sticksindeyard #aliceyard #trinbago #woodbrook #belmont 📸️ @method_moda

Thinking fondly of my growing relationship with @aliceyardinsta, with so much appreciation for the love and support they continue to give to my practice. Thank you for all that you do in the spirit of community, and for continuing to nourish the creative energy that flows through your space. Congratulations on 20 remarkable years, and on all that has been made possible along the way. 🤍 Photography: @jerelramsey

More Midwives, Less Data Centers! There is a remarkably strong through line between current day birth work and the culture of resistance inherent in Caribbean carnival or mas (masquerade.) Old Mas, in particular, is an opportunity to make political commentary. What are your thoughts on this one? The Baby Doll is a historic and satirical masquerade character from Trinidad and Tobago Carnival that dramatizes themes of race, gender, and social accountability. I was drawn to play mas with Makeda Thomas @makedathomassances and @ttdanceinstitute because of her spotlight of Black Matrescence. “About the Band “Paper Dolls” stages Black matrescence - the process of becoming “mother”- as an insurgent aesthetic where mother becomes both reliquary and ruin of the colonial imagination. Crowned with a chorus of replicated doll faces, the masqueraders appear as moving altarpieces, bearing swaddled babies that counter the spectral labor etched across the maternal body. In Carnival’s traditions of doubling and sacred play, the work treats mas as an archival surface through which histories of reproductive violence and sentimentalized “paper motherhood” are scored, repeated, and undone. “Paper Dolls” asks how the Black matrescence becomes a choreographic method: a slow procession in which each step, each held child, scripts new grammars of care, refusal, and remembrance. This presentation is a project of “Paper Dolls: Archival Interventions in Baby Doll Mas”, made possible with a 2026 Creative Equities Fund Performing Arts Grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council and the Howard Gilman Foundation.” The moko jumbie here adorned in red, lace and cowrie shells represents the maternal bloodline. As she baby dolls we were instructed to stay near to her. To protect the bloodline. This headpiece! Altar and archive 🙏🏾 So intricate. So intentional @makedathomasdances
