Dare I call this the eggshell dial of the Universal Genève Polerouter world? If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I’m a massive fan of vintage Heuer chronographs, especially the eggshell dial Carrera 2447 and 3647. That love isn’t just because they’re rare or sought after; it comes down to the pure, simple elegance of the original Carrera design. A matte, off-white finish with zero dial decoration makes for the ultimate blank canvas. Some might call it boring. Some might call it ordinary. But being extraordinary often comes from being ordinary, extra well.

The more I interact with Autavia, the more I find myself comparing it to Carrera. But these two are very different. The Carrera is simple, elegant, perfectly proportioned, and beautiful. I dare say it almost feels delicate for a tool watch. On the contrary, the Autavia is practically yelling at me 😂 “I’m a tool watch!” It feels significantly heavier, chunky, rugged, and built entirely for its intended use. Both absolutely have their time and place in a collection. But if we are asking which one feels closer to its heavy duty purpose?

While the Autavia was born as a rugged tool for rally navigators, this reference 73363 cemented its legacy on the Formula 1 tarmac. Housed in that unpolished and unapologetically massive 42mm robust cushion case, it trades delicate elegance for a raw utilitarian presence.

The real draw here is the Siffert colour with an incredible matte cream dial. It has the same soft vintage warmth as an eggshell Carrera, but the sheer depth of this dial is what really grabs your attention. That depth highlights the simple, purposeful colours and the bold geometry of the layout. The black sub registers pop heavily against the piercing electric blue accents on the chronograph hand and outer track. Not to mention the well patinated lume plots around the dial and hands.

It is a striking combination of pure legibility and vintage motorsport flair, making this exact 73363 configuration one of the most sought after manual wind chronographs of its era.

I believe the true beauty of a sunburst dial shows when details like these are finally brought into light. The concentric sub-dials, the counter-reflections of the sub-dial rings, the contrasting applied hour markers, and of course, that subtle radial sunburst finish.
Compared to how stealthy the 3647N looks, it has a very contrasting charm. Which execution do you prefer?

Double-signed dial brothers. Exactly what makes me (or us, for that matter) lose my mind over these dials is unknown. A long time ago, when I was just starting to learn these historical facts, I heard that some people actually don’t like them at all. I was blown away. While I do understand the “less is more” mentality, and why some collectors avoid deviating from the original design, the whole reason I was drawn to the vintage watch world was essentially because these pieces are simply, different. They don’t necessarily bling, or have a big presence on the wrist, but they are charming. I believe that charm comes from these little things adding up.

While I was reading through the Heuer Carrera Chronograph book written by Richard Crosthwaite, I found something interesting. 8 reasons why Heuer chronographs are the best. And the book goes on about how great the functions are, how it’s precise, the heritage.. all the great things. But my favourite reason has to be: Styled for every day.

To this date, in my eyes (maybe I’m blind) these simple clean looking pieces with two or three sub-dials, with couple of logos and letters, no decorated pushers.. and NOTHING else, are the purest form of what chronographs should look like. People have asked me, especially given the fact that I do not have many watch friends outside of social media, “why do you like these.. boring watches?” And the answer is because they are honest, authentic, and they don’t try to be something else. And if these qualities of vintage Carreras bore some people, so be it.
