I attempted an Ironman 70.3 and did not finish.

The event does not allow you to take shortcuts. If you're not confident in the water - you're not finishing the swim. If you don't have the stamina or fueling strategy - you're not making it through the run. For me, I didn't have the power needed on the bike, and I failed to make the cut-off time to start my run.

The race is only a realisation of the preparation, and it couldn't be more true for this event, even more so than the marathon. You have to know you are going to cross the finish line before you hit the start line. Only I knew my preparation, and I knew even before I got down to Weymouth that I didn't prepare to the standard I needed. Most of it comes down to not treating the training with the respect it deserves. It's scary how accurate you can estimate what your body can and cannot do when you spend a lot of time pushing it to its limits. This was all realised on the bike course - sure, I pushed myself as hard as I could on the day - but you can't tough your way out of a lack of preparation.

If you give up, it goes down as a failure. But if you go on to succeed, it becomes a lesson. Let's see if I learned any lessons when I complete this damn thing.

Lessons aside, I couldn't be more grateful for my friends who cheered me on even when I was dead last on the bike course and my family who anxiously hoped that I'm okay. You know who you are. It means the world to me that you were there. taken in Weymouth, Dorset by @1433rora
