August 31, 1941. Satchel Paige, near the peak of his Negro League fame, put his name to work and pitched for the Kansas City Monarchs in a fundraiser at Comiskey Park to raise money for Provident Hospital. At the time, Provident was one of the first non-segregated hospitals in the country. Satch was the winning pitcher, as the Monarchs defeated the Chicago American Giants 8-3.

1946 Negro League All-Star Game redemption ticket. This, and 85 cents, got one lucky spectator into one of the last pre-integration Negro League All-Star game ever played. The ‘46 game saw greats such as Buck Leonard. Josh Gibson, Dan Bankhead, Larry Doby, Howard Easterling, Monte Irvin, and many others.

This was the first time the East-West game was played at Griffith Stadium and drew 16,268 fans. The game was actually delayed for 15 minutes due to a player strike over a financial dispute, but was ultimately resolved. and the East triumphed 6-3.

While April 15, 1947 is recognized as the breaking of the color barrier, one could argue that officially occurred on Oct 23, 1945. News began to circulate late that day that the Dodgers had signed Jackie Robinson to a contract, and became front page news on the 24th. The rest is history…

Judy Johnson’s 1920’s Hilldale Baseball Club ticket book, signed by owner Ed Bolden. Amazing to me that a ticket book, from one of the greatest Negro League players and teams ever, has survived over a hundred years. The ‘20’s Hilldale teams, in addition to winning the ‘25 chip, contained legendary players such as Louis Santop, Oscar Charleston, Biz Mackey, and many others of the leagues best.

Abe Saperstein and Satchel Paige were long-time acquaintances throughout their respective baseball careers. Saperstein began helping to build the Paige brand in the early ‘30s — recruitng Paige and other Black players in 1933 to join white semi-pro teams in North Dakota—a state with 377 Black residents out of roughly 681,000 total residents. An auto dealer who owned the Bismarck team asked Saperstein to recommend “the greatest colored pitcher in baseball today,” and Saperstein arranged for Paige to join his team. Paige was such a hit that when he returned to play for the Bismarck club in 1935, Saperstein got him a contract for $8,600 in salary and fringe benefits—more than seven times the per capita income of Americans at that time.
Saperstein was instrumental in getting Paige an MLB tryout in ‘48, and continued a professional relationship well beyond as evidenced by the fantastic 1954 advertisement seen above.

Last professional baseball game at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn - August 23, 1959. Amazingly, it was not the Dodgers who would take the field that day, but rather, the Kansas City Monarchs versus the Stars and Cubans - a barnstorming doubleheader. Perhaps the best part — Satchel Paige took the hill for the last pro game ever at Ebbets.

The Kansas City Monarchs topped the Stars 3-1 in the opener. Then Satch — wearing a Chicago White Sox uniform lent to him by former employer Bill Veeck — came on to strike out four in a three-inning start. The master allowed three runs, but only one was earned.

1903 Harvard program featuring William Clarence Matthews.

“Matthews May Play Ball with Tenney’s Team”

So the Boston Traveler headline read in July 1905, 42 years prior to Jackie Robinson broke the color line.

Matthews was of course, William Clarence Matthews, an incredible shortstop for Harvard, who lead the team in hitting his Sophomore, Junior and Senior seasons.

Post graduation, the Northern League, a whites-only semi-pro league, opened their door to Matthews — a tremendous breakthrough in American society. Matthews integrated that league, played well to start, and T he Boston Nationals were rumored to have an interest in Matthews joining the team, but it was not to be. Ironically, and sadly, Boston was the last team to achieve integration in the major leagues.

80 Years ago today, Jackie Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs against the Chicago American Giants at Comiskey Park, going 1-3 with a double. This game was one of Jackie’s earliest Negro League games, and would be a stepping-stone for his breaking the color barrier.
