Join us Thursday, October 1 at 7pm for a conversation between C. Francis Fisher and Karley Kelsey on Fisher’s translation of Satisfied Sarcophagi, the collected short stories of Joyce Mansour!

Egyptian exile Joyce Mansour was one of the most important writers to join André Breton’s Paris Surrealist group after the Second World War. This exciting follow-up to City Lights’ acclaimed selection of Mansour’s poems (Emerald Wounds, 2023) is a milestone in the ongoing rediscovery of one of the most powerful voices of 20th-century Surrealism. Known during her lifetime primarily as a poet, Mansour also published a small but significant body of prose. Satisfied Sarcophagi collects her complete short stories, drawing from her two collections published in France, Les Gisantes Satisfaits (1958) and Ça (1970).

C. Francis Fisher is a poet and translator. She is the translator of two volumes of Surrealist Joyce Mansour’s work: In the Glittering Maw: Selected Poems appeared with World Poetry Books in 2024 and Satisfied Sarcophagi: Collected Short Stories came out with City Lights Summer 2026. Her first poetry collection, Fresh Hell, will come out with Four Way Books in 2028. She has been supported by residencies and fellowships from Yaddo, the Millay Colony, and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences.

Karla Kelsey is the author of seven books, most recently the book-length poem On Certainty (Omnidawn, 2023); Of Sphere, published by Essay Press in 2017; and the poet’s novel, Transcendental Factory: For Mina Loy, released byWinter Editions in 2024. She is also the editor of Lost Writings: Two Novels by Mina Loy (Yale University Press, 2024). Recent writing can be found in Conjunctions, Denver Quarterly, and Annulet. The recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, Karla has taught in Budapest and is currently on the faculty of Susquehanna University.

Update on Friday - 9/25
Due to the weather, the sale will not take place on Saturday, 9/26. It will be rescheduled at a later date.

Paula Cooper Gallery is having an archive and library sale!

This Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26, you can find us outside of 192 Books, at 192 10th Ave, from 11 AM-6PM.

Almost sixty years ago, Paula Cooper Gallery opened in SoHo. From the gallery’s inception, we’ve maintained a robust archive of periodicals, artists’ books, exhibition catalogues, ephemera and other printed material. Over the years, the archive has accumulated many duplicates and now needs room to grow.

Come sift through books and magazines from the gallery’s archive, on sale alongside gallery publications from five decades of publishing. Nothing over $15!

Join us next Tuesday, 9/22, at 7pm for a celebration of the publication of Wishbone, by Laia Jufresa, who will@be in conversation with Valeria Luiselli.

Laia Jufresa’s first book written in English, Wishbone is dreamy and precise, insightful and thrilling. Tor Sima is the founder of the International Museum of Color in Oaxaca. Vica Luft is a secretary and single mother in Edinburgh. Disparate as their lives are, they mirror and inform one another in striking ways: an early trauma, a shared lover, an affinity for the octopus.

Laia Jufresa is a Mexican author based in Edinburgh. She is the author of the widely acclaimed novel Umami and the memoir Veinte, veintiuno. In 2017 she was named one of the Bogotá39, a list of Latin America’s outstanding writers under forty. Her work has been translated into a dozen languages and appeared in McSweeney’s, Vogue, and El País, among others. Wishbone is her second novel.

Valeria Luiselli is an acclaimed writer of both fiction and nonfiction. She is the author of Sidewalks, Faces in the Crowd, The Story of My Teeth, Tell Me How It Ends and the international bestseller Lost Children Archive. Her most recent novel, Beginning Middle End, was released this year to critical and commercial success. She is the recipient of a 2019 MacArthur Fellowship and the winner of two Los Angeles Times Book Prizes, an American Book Award, the Folio Prize, the Carnegie Medal and the 2021 International Dublin Literary Award. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. She lives in New York City.
