What an amazing week. I was honored to design and co-lead the High School Student Leadership Summit of the Multilingual Educators Transforming Achievement Conference held at the district headquarters of the Stanislaus Spunty, Office of Education offices. All of the students were from three local high schools, many were members of their school’s Debate Team. These are bright, young, multilingual scholars.
My question to them was, How can we think about multilingual education in schools without first learning about Indigenous languages where we live? (more in comments) #postingpains #multilingüe taken in Stanislaus County by @1ahwatl

Thirty-two years ago on May 11, 1993 almost 100 UCLA students and supporters were arrested by LAPD under the orders of disgraced former chancellor Charles E Young. Two weeks ago, incoming Chancellor Frenk allowed for a battalion of UCPD storm troopers to move on unarmed students for daring to watch a movie. This is appalling. Several of those formerly arrested at UCLA in 1993 have reassembled into a campaign called Californians for the Courage of Conviction to help defend dissent on all universities and colleges in California because the contradiction that our State Attorney General and other electeds are calling for resistance while students and labor leaders are being brutalized and major programs cut. This must stop. We will not standby idly. #idlenomore #courageofconviction #defenddissent #handsoffourstudents #handsoffourscholars taken in Los Angeles, California by @1ahwatl

Dear Indigenous language policy advocates and California Indigenous Peoples advocates in general…has the state of California ever funded Native language revitalization in any meaningful way? Has the State of California ever resourced Indigenous language education in the school system or as a part of the k-12 curriculum? by @1ahwatl

Last week, the UTLA president referred to him as being in “superintendent jail” in her public comments before the Los Angeles Unified School District school board. I guess he’s out of that now. I hope my Native American colleagues recognize the internal cycles of conflict of interest that this superintendent represents. To my MMED friends who hid behind his skirt, watch out, you are now holding the bag to explain why the district spent $6 million with one book vendor to hurriedly justify the expense of the indigenous student achievement plan, which you spent years trying to block. No public process, and no public bid. while his position and defense of our communities, under attack by Federales was to be expected, he was no less European than Cristobal Colón, even though he tries to pass himself off as Latino. LA USD school board answer to the public as to why they chose to rehire him with zero public process or community input. After initially, apologizing to indigenous peoples when he first entered office and finally got around to meeting with community, he then proceeded to bully the community of tribal leaders and educators willing to spend our time advocating for our students in the district. Tomorrow, you will hear advocates remind the district of the $10 million pledge to indigenous student achievement. the district is getting off cheap as usual, tribal consultation should dictate the use of funds to the benefit of indigenous students with all federal dollars and all state funds. While the Cabal that runs the district, may have lost its head, the minions are certainly at work to overcome this setback. “It’s all about the kids” the bureaucrats love to say this. by @1ahwatl

beyond my personal survival of government schooling, my path as an educator began in 1988, learning in movimiento from mexicanas y centroamericanas y chicanas and anti-hispanic mechistas and black liberationistas who rejected conformity as a path to higher education at ucla. it began upon leaving, when my grandmother offered me all she could for my journey in college, an orange and black checkered mexican blanket. I have passed this blanket on to each of my children as they each have started their path in college. at the turn of the last century my paternal grandparents walked from the tip of baja california sur to mexicali and eventually to the fields in Arizona and across california ending up in calexico, disillusioned, dejected and dispossessed. i imagine the beaches they left behind and the desperation that drove them to leave everything and everyone behind, forever. by @1ahwatl
