Every district, every school, every child matters…

I didn't re-edit or re-tone these frames.

Shot ten years ago now. Hard to imagine.

Felt like weekly, sometimes multiple times a week...

We were all in the streets back then.

From the pipelines and refineries, to the border, to the bans, to the students standing for safe schools, to grassroots campaigns, to healthcare demands and housing needs....

"The people united, will never be defeated..."

Civil Disobedience at times...

People like to quote Mandela, MLK, Gandhi...

Men who eventually showed the world-- the world that was locking them up and restricting their movements....

...that their voices carried truths, their voices were flashlights.

Consider...

What would you have been doing in their shoes, in their times?

What would you like to be doing now...in your current shoes?

We may not understand the proper way for community organizing, but remember..

We don't need a degree for these movements of collective ambition mobilized as one.

We only need to find our flashlight inside so we too can shine lights on truths previously unseen.

Our generation is meant for more than climbing ladders and applauding entertainments....

We have such giant missions ahead of us if we're to get to peace.

Don't give in, don't give up.

Each decision...has the potential to suffocate the old systems.

Xtlaxtlawi! Today we begin the 25th year of educational self-determination at Anawakalmekak. For the past 24 academic years, our children and youth have found safe haven to be who they truly are and grow into who they are to become. We are grateful to the community that has sustained us, the indigenous students, parents, educators, and elders, who over the decades have upheld the righteous struggle for and education rich in maternal languages, experiential learning, Indigenous art and expression and powerful community. We think all of our allies and supporters and those who have become new relatives. a Kalmekak understands education to be more than about training a workforce or conditioning the children of a workforce, we are in relationship in the act of our mutual liberation. #xinachtli #milpa #indigenouseducation #landback #indigenous

For 25 years, Anawakalmekak has hosted conversations with partners, allies, and relatives to discuss topics ranging from Indigenous Education to investment in Native Language revitalization in public schools to the importance of supporting innovative educational models that center environmental stewardship and Indigenous Self-determination. California State Legislators and Gov Newsom created @ccee_ca initiative to launch the Secondary School Redesign pilot project to identify the most innovative and effective educational models for public schools. California collaborative for Educational Excellence chose Anawakalmekak’s Learning Lands Collaborative partnership as a potential template for delivering on the promise of quality, equitable education for every student.

Their perspectives pierce through the same misinformation and echoes of White Supremacy that birthed Native American boarding schools 130 years ago, and today call for the closure of schools like Anawakalmekak. @jamierocha shares her perspectives about compulsory education in our state.

Since the pandemic, California has made a historic investment of billions in community schools as a model to remove the barriers to success for all students. In 2025, California also set aside funding to launch a Secondary Schools Redesign Pilot Project across the state to identify schools that are rethinking and reorganizing secondary school design. Anawakalmekak’s Learning Lands Collaborative was selected as one such model to help lead the way for community- based schools as part of California Collaborative for Educational Excellence’s (@ccee_ca ). Our educational model has established a community-based Indigenous ecosystem grounded in Native Language revitalization, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous Self-determination. The results speak for themselves, high levels of cultural wellness, 100% graduation and among the highest rates of college readiness in the state.

While this year’s state budget has largely been settled, there are still opportunities to invest in #IndigenousEducation in ways the state never has before. Will state legislators ensure that historic investment in schools include #indigenous students and #nativelanguages too? Can a community school truly redesign education if Indigenous People’s educational self-determination and tribal sovereignty is excluded or overlooked?

Since the pandemic, California has invested billions of dollars in what proponents call a “community school” model designed to reach all students. Next year, California schools will receive an additional $1 billion to support community school initiatives. Today, we ask ourselves, how can all students be engaged if schools do not meaningfully engage tribal education offices, indigenous community organizations, or even American Indian Education Centers through this model? Now, schools and districts across the state, have an opportunity to change this neglect and uplift American Indian rights to educational self-determination by partnering with American Indian tribes, education departments, and urban Indigenous community organizations.

The investment by a California into the pedagogy and praxis of Indigenous resurgence education is not simply about “replacing the pillars of factory model schooling for new pillars of a more gentle form of setter schooling” it is much deeper
