“The only thing that is permanent is the call to love one another and do the right thing for each other.”

In his sermon “The Transient and the Permanent,” Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter reminds us, through the words of Theodore Parker, that the heart of faith isn’t found in rituals, buildings, or dogma, but in the timeless call to love one another, do justice, and love God. Everything else is transient.

“If you wanna be a Unitarian, you’re gonna need to hold more than one idea in your head at a time.”

Unitarian Universalism doesn’t ask us to ignore the pain of the world or explain it away with easy answers. It calls us to hold horror and hope, suffering and beauty, grief and joy — all at once. If that way of seeing the world makes more sense to you than being told to “just accept it,” you might be a Unitarian too.

So you wanna be a Universalist?

Being Universalist means we can’t stay neutral in the face of injustice. It means naming evil where it shows up and choosing love that resists without dehumanizing in return.

In the second sermon from our UU 101 series, Rev. Beth Dana invites us to reclaim a Universalism that is bold, compassionate, and unafraid to tell the truth. Access the full sermon on YouTube, your favorite podcast platform, or on our website here: https://dallasuu.org/sermons

Mike and Karen Stanton know the importance of showing up in service to the church – and they also know that service alone doesn’t keep the lights on.

First Unitarian Church of Dallas was there for the Stantons as they began a family and raised their daughters, and they give to the church to sustain the community that has given them so much. Since Karen joined the staff as our Director of Pastoral Care this year, her commitment has deepened, knowing that the church ministers and staff uphold our values in every interaction.

As Mike shares, pledging is his way of saying “I’m so glad we have a place to be.”

The support of members and friends of the church is what makes all of this possible. Pledge today at dallasuu.org/2027pledge taken in First Unitarian Church of Dallas by @1stuchurch

“My hope is that your scars and the story they tell over time may become a source of strength that moves you to be a force for healing and liberation for others. Because only those who have been in the desert themselves can lead others out of it.”

One of the most common questions we get at the church in response to our core belief in the worth and dignity of every person is - “What about the monsters, the real monsters?”

In his sermon “The Real Real,” Rev. T. J. FitzGerald implores us to see the vulnerability in every person and also reminds us that even inherently good people can armour themselves in dangerous ways.

Phillip Vorkoper grew up at First Unitarian Church of Dallas. After bringing his wife Aleysha to visit the church, she said “I think this is what I’ve been looking for for 30 years.”

They both enjoy belonging to a place that allows everyone to experience the holy in a genuine way, and they give to the church because of the impact it has on the greater community and the world at large. For them, pledging is a centering practice and an investment in the future.
