Excellent evening of poetry by @naomishihabnye @1stuchurch Thank you for such an uplifting and beautiful evening. I was able to ask her about the connection between nature and calling out injustice with poetry. She talked about how essential time in nature is for all of us.

I’ve been meaning to post this pic since two things happened in the same week.

First, this pic.

This is a screenshot of a video of my old friend, Rev. Daniel Kanter. He’s the lead pastor at @1stuchurch of Dallas in Dallas, and I’ve known him almost thirty years it seems.

He’s speaking at an event to support the religious rights of Muslims in North Texas. The event became extremely tense when it was interrupted by a counter-protestor.

My friend Dr. @drmphillips1960 wrote about this moment at the time.

But, secondly….

In the days following this event, in the same week, our United States Military, under the direction of Hegseth, removed “Unitarian Universalist” from the list of approved faiths that can be claimed by United States troops.

This denomination —whose roots date back to the very founding of America, far older than many still “approved” groups— now faces their own version of religious discrimination at the hands of this administration.

I’m not suggesting UU’s were removed because of anything Daniel did. I’m inviting you to SEE THE PATTERN.

See how the religious rights of many Americans are being squeezed and violated.

See how true religious bigots (like the counter protestor) are being given moral license to interrupt. In fact, are being encouraged to do so.

That was not the first time a gathering supportive of Muslims has been interrupted by a “Christian” with moral license. Several years back, a woman briefly took the mic at Muslim Capitol Day in Austin.

My point here is: If you think this is just about Muslims, you are wrong.

All of our religious freedoms are in jeopardy. Christian Nationalism’s shockingly narrow view of religious practice has real-world implication for many of you, for many of us, and is corrosive to our civil society, itself.

“They came for the Muslims…but I was not a Muslim…”
“They came for the Unitarian Universalists, but I was not a Unitarian Universalist….”

You know the poem.
You know how it ends.

Time to defend the religious freedoms of ALL Americans, friends.

More beautiful faces! Loved to see all the beautiful people at Pride yesterday and have over 100 participants draw themselves 💜🌈

We lost a few to a spill and actually ran out of canvases, but so much fun and so proud to participate with @1stuchurch !
