Matt Saunders’s practice connects painting, photography and printmaking to the moving image, heavily referencing film, the history of cinema and sometimes fiction.

The actress Jane Birkin (1946-2023) has been a frequent source of inspiration for Saunders and his art; the impetus of his latest series “Birkin Rosso” came from Birkin’s role as an androgynous waitress in the 1976 film “Je t’aime moi non plus” and from sculptor Medardo Rosso (1858–1928). Rosso’s sculptures are characterized by the same ambiguity of matter and space found in Saunders’ prints.

“Birkin Rosso” is the subject of Matt Saunders’s solo presentation at the @IFPDA Print Fair, opening today at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, presented by @BORCH_Editions.

This suite will also be featured in Saunders’s forthcoming solo exhibition at Marian Goodman Gallery, New York, opening in June 2026, which will include new multi-channel hand-drawn animations, Saunders’s camera-less photographs, drawings, and prints.
