I might get to live out @bailey_not_allison ’s dream of being half human and half arthropod- I’ll be Bee-Man! I unknowingly laid my arm on a bee and it scared the shit out of her. by @270bees

We have a moral & ethical responsibility to our animals. I’m still on the fence about joining the FSA for the ELAP (Emergency Livestock Assistance Program). That said I think we’re doing it wrong. We need to incentivize GOOD animal husbandry. Not waiting for disaster or incentive negligence .
The ELAP program, while better than a poke in the eye - does allow room for fraud & negligence. Why go through the work of keeping pigs, cows, fish & honey bees alive when you can just neglect them & get money for it? by @270bees

Tested the big colony for mites. She is once again mite free!! Okay, I shouldn’t say mite free. Just bc mites didn’t show up in the sample doesn’t mean they’re not there. It just means mite numbers are too low to be detected in a sample of 300. I noticed a few cells had been uncapped & recapped which is a mite sensitive hygienic behavior - something I’m breeding for. by @270bees

Honey bees are just animals. They’re not scheming to sting you. Aggressive behavior isn’t the right word to describe the DEFENSIVE behavior honey bees exhibit. Now when you take food source away from honey bees- they’ll get hangry but will eventually settle down (American Bee Journal June 2026) taken in Murray, Kentucky by @270bees

This is not just a beekeeper’s problem. If you like birds & other insectivore - these hornets are gonna be your problem too. They will eventually get into KY. How long will it take? 65 miles per hour. YLHs are one of the few insects that know to use humans as transport. These hornets, their mere presence is enough to give honey bees ā€œptsdā€. They don’t prey on just honey bees. Once a honey bee population is decimated they’ll move on to another species.
šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§particularly šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁄󠁮󠁧ó æhas a mandate for its citizens in the South to report & destroy the YLH nests & so far it’s working.
YLH’s are not a beekeepers burden to deal with. Everyone needs to educate themselves on what the YLH is, what it looks like, what it’s nest looks like & why they are everyone problem taken in Murray, Kentucky by @270bees

It’s easier to blame the immigrant honey bee than it is to hold the HOA & monoculturalists accountable. Meet America’s native honey bee- Apis nearctica. Like primates & equestrians - honey bees evolved out of America (& Africa at the same time). Like the prehistoric horses, Apis nearctica went extinct in America. Like the horse, the Apis genus was reintroduced. The crowd that wants honey bees exterminated from America (yes they’re out there) are just colonizing dog whistlers. This nuc is on its 1st week of Formic pro. Formic pro ideally should be kept on the bees for 2. I won’t be here next Sunday. You can leave it on longer. I’m kinda iffy about that. While it’s a natural pesticide, we lost amitrazs effectiveness, a synthetic pesticide, to beekeepers leaving the treatment in past its date. While mites growing resistant to Formic is probably not going to happen- I beg the question ā€œwhy are we going to gamble on it?ā€. My plan as it is - let it run til Wednesday and remove it before I leave. taken in Murray, Kentucky by @270bees

Hadnt mite tested the nuc in a while…. 3 mites (those reddish circles at the bottom of the cup). Thew a pinch of Formic acid on & I’ll keep it on for 2 weeks.
I suspect this colony has some carniolan genetics - the queen is slowing down on the amount t of eggs she lays (versus an Italian queen who will never slow down). This slowing down on egg laying is a survival technique for winter with this subspecies of honey bee. Low population, high food reserve for winter time survival. taken in Murray, Kentucky by @270bees

There’s a scene in Disney’s Honey We Shrunk Ourselves when Rick Moranis & Stuart Parkin are in some crisp dip and the adolescent ladies were dipping the crisps in the dip. Rick’s character: ā€œthey’re adolescent girls, how much can they eat?ā€.
Anywho this is the 3rd time I’ve filled this feeder jar. The girls are hungry!
The merging of the nucs was successful- I pulled the newspaper out. I’ll continue feeding the 1:1-2:1 ratio til Thanksgiving. The queen looks good taken in Murray, Kentucky by @270bees
