I look forward to fall all year long. I love the flowers, the pumpkins, the cooler weather, the shorter days...I love everything about it. In the fall I think of abundance, of holidays, of family gatherings, and even the simple joy of wearing sweaters.
.
I have warm and fuzzy memories attached to my love of autumn that run deep and wide. I recall the swoosh of colorful leaves as I raked them into giant piles. I remember the gathering of hundreds of ripe apples that fell from the tree in our backyard...and the sound of the honeybees feasting on them as we worked.
.
I recall earlier sunsets and the lighting of the first fire of the season...it’s smokey smell and the constant crackling. There would be firewood to stack and kindling to collect.
.
I remember lighting candles at dinner and writing Christmas lists before Halloween.
.
There is so much to fondly recall, but the memory of being cozy and warm as winter approached still has a place in my heart and my thoughts...even after all these years of living in Florida. I guess the very best memories of the past live on in the future as well.

It was my first time at a cross country competition and it didn’t disappoint. So many competitors and so many schools! Grandson, Brooks, ran well in the heat and humidity, with a hard-earned medal hung around his neck at the finish line. I hope to see more of these competitions, as I have much to learn about cross country running. Thanks for a fun evening Brooks! (center blond)

The sun was shining brightly as the Honor Guard for the U.S. Air Force slowly walked into the shelter. Our emotions ran deep as we stood for taps, hands over our hearts. Quietly, the flag was unfolded, then perfectly refolded into the all too familiar blue and white-starred triangle. Gentle words of gratitude-for-service were spoken as I was handed the flag used to commit my father and mother to their final resting place in the VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL.

Carl G. Brenner, P51 fighter pilot WWII, United States Air Force (Army Air Corp), husband and father. October 14, 1923 - June 25, 2020.
Patricia E. Brenner, wife and mother. July 10, 1933 - August 26, 2026.
.
Together, for 70 years of life - together, resting eternally in peace.

If there’s a morning sunbeam, Biscuit will find it. If there’s a spot of warmth in an air-conditioned home, Biscuit will find that too. But, I’m so glad he finds exactly what he needs when he sleeps beside me all night long.

Mother Nature was furious this evening - unleashing wind gusts, pouring rain, and local flooding. She encouraged me to stay in, make a cup of tea, and watch her fury ebb and flow up and down the river. Happy to oblige, I took her advice.
.
When she had her fill of drama, she left quietly, leaving us with deep puddles, greener grass, and the subtle colors of her backside leaving town. A little candlelight, a light dinner, and the ever-changing Florida weather...it’s a near perfect Sunday night.

When a friend called and said, “Come take pictures of the amazing crotons in my backyard,” I didn’t hesitate.
.
Unlike the short-lived brilliance of the north’s autumn leaves, croton’s colors last all year long. Granted, this specimen is particularly brilliant, but with enough sun and water, crotons are one of nature’s most colorful personalities.

I brake for orchids - especially when I’m riding my bike and the light is just perfect, the blooms are plentiful, and Mother Nature is generous with her magic.
.
I braked hard this week for an old oak tree displaying multiple, cascading white orchids all blooming at the same time. There was a light drizzle, a bit of filtered sunlight, and a gentle breeze. Oh yes, I felt the magic.

It was supposed to be a quick trip to the mall for new jeans. It turned into something a bit more meaningful when I saw many of the stores celebrating October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I popped into one of the stores when I saw them serving pink lemonade. Several of us gathered for the fresh strawberries and chocolates as well. Conversation started slowly until we realized we were all survivors of breast cancer.
.
Stories were told, advice was given, and phone numbers and contacts were readily exchanged. It’s the club none of us asked to join, but now that we’re members, we’re bonded in a way that is lasting and special.
.
We spoke about our differing timelines and treatment plans - the bumps along the way and the successes we celebrated. The newbies, nervous and fragile, took hope from those of us who counted our remission in years rather than months.
.
Heads and hearts full, we make our way back out into the mall with long stemmed pink roses. We wished each other well with prayers and high fives, each of us richer for the unexpected time together.

Clowns are not one of my favorite things in life. I imagine them as a little bit scary and potentially kind of strange. But, I recently walked through a flea market and saw this collection, and I had to stop and examine them. Whimsical, innocent, smiling...they seemed harmless enough.
.
I was drawn to the chubby redhead blowing up the blue balloon - his task forever frozen in porcelain. Their smiles were there for my amusement, rather than a wish to haunt me. So, with my camera poised in their direction, I made peace with the clowns gathered on this random tabletop. In fact, I may be lamenting the fact that blue balloon clown didn’t find his way into my camera bag.

Steady rain is bringing the fall flowers to life - both wild and cultivated. Their colorful beauty and the warm evening light keeps me hopping on and off my bike, camera in hand. One thing is for certain - the miles go by with greater enjoyment when Mother Nature paints such lovely scenery.

As I approached the meadow where the deer often gather, the only sound to be heard was the crunching of sand and dirt under my bike tires. Although the deer are quite familiar with hikers and bikers, I always ride towards the open space as quietly as possible, hoping to find a few of the deer grazing on the wildflowers and tall grasses.
.
Sure enough, riding around the bend I saw a lovely family of deer - a doe, a buck, and a very young fawn. The doe, relaxed but alert, raised her head to assess my presence. Seeing no perceived threat, she returned to her grazing while her fawn showed more curiosity. The buck stayed nearly hidden but aware, preferring to observe rather than have his picture taken. Fair enough.
.
Spending most of my time observing rather than shooting, I enjoyed having this quiet time and the deer all to myself. At last, I surrendered the solitude, crunching the sand and dirt under my tires once again.

Would’ve loved to have returned home from errands today and found a soft spot under a blanket on the couch...a cat or two beside me...all of us drifting off to sleep for an afternoon nap.
.
No, no, no...not today friends. This is going to be a fitness focused fall and winter. Found my suit, my fins and my googles, and off I walked to my community pool. Didn’t feel like doing it, but 50 laps later I was glad I did. Still wanted that nap, but the swim was what I needed.
