I’ve always thought that motorcycle racers are both the bravest and craziest people on the planet. Here are a few from the 2000 Daytona 200 including Doug Chandler, Tommy Hayden and Jamie Hacking. Could use help aiding the 30 and 86 riders.

Phoenix was always a good trip, if the racing wasn’t exciting the scenery was. Back in 2000 we had a good race, won by Jeff Burton and nice desert weather ands light.

I also liked it as a Championship race as tire wear at this track was interesting as some cars slowed and others came into their own on longer runs.
#will you be watching this weekend’s NASCAR race even though it will not decide a championship?

Many times as a photographer, you don’t realize the historical significance of what you’re documenting until much later. That was certainly the case for me in October 2000 at Talladega, when Dale Earnhardt came from 15th place on the final restart and sliced masterfully through traffic to score what would become the 76th and final victory of his career.

This remains one of the most amazing Earnhardt wins I ever witnessed. I remember looking at the lineup for that final restart and mentally writing him off, thinking there were simply too many cars to pass in the time remaining. But this was Dale Earnhardt at Talladega, and you never count him out!

Do you have a favorite Earnhardt win?

Even as a young photographer 40 years ago I knew it: racing is a people sport. For NASCAR fans of the 90s here are a few familiar faces from Darlington in March of 1994, can you names them all? Some are easier that others. Scroll all the way down for the answers.

As a photographer covering space shuttle launches in the 1990s, a predictable schedule was not a thing. Often you had to keep showing up day after day or , as in the case of STS 93 in July of 1999, night after night until everything aligned and the bird took flight.

3 days after a thunderstorm dropped bolts of lightning directly on Kennedy Space Center, the milestone mission took to the skies with space shuttle Columbia blasting off with NASA’s first females mission commander Eileen Collins on-board.

For me, this was a launch where I was assigned to head off-property and find an interesting view of shuttle watchers witnessing the blastoff. After photographing the crew, headed by Collins embarking for the launch pad, I decided to head down to Cocoa Beach, a popular spot to watch launches.

The night of the scrub I was able to document the troublesome storm cell moving through, and on the night of the launch I found a group of spectators silhouetted against a time exposure of the shuttle heading to orbit.

Back in the day, shooting editorial assignments on film meant being at the mercy of our editors when it came to film stock. The 1992 24 Hours of Daytona was one of those lucky occasions when I was handed a few rolls of both black-and-white and color film!

Pictured here are the No. 11 Roush Mustang of Mark Martin, Jim Stevens, Robbie Buhl, Calvin Fish, Max Jones and Robby Gordon, alongside the No. 44 Kudzu Buick of Fermin Vélez, Andy Evans, Lon Bender and Dominic Dobson.

Sebring Sunset 1986: the No.11 Mazda Lola of Chuck Kendall, Paul Lewis and Max Jones races into turn one. Shooting sunsets on black and white film did not allow for reliance on color, but there was still a look and feel to dusky images at racetracks. Sebring is one of the best sunset tracks, but what is your favorite?

Standing on turn 4 photographing the 1990 NASCAR Busch series race at Daytona. At the front of the field Darrell Waltrip gets up into the wall, I’m don’t recall if a tire blew or he hit fluid on the track. Early in the race so the field was tightly packed and I had a fresh roll of film in the camera. Virtually the entire field piled into the blocked track. I remember the crashing seemed to last forever and when it was all over the scene looked like a group our parts pickers walking through a junkyard as the drivers exited their cars and compared notes with each other.

As I recall it was one of Daytona’s biggest crashes at the time in terms of number of cars involved, well over 30. It was one of the only times a shot an entire 36 exposure roll of film on a single incident.

The only time I photographed dragsters in my career was at Moroso Motorsports Park in 1983. The only names I recognized were Raymond Beadle in his Blue Max funny car and Don Garlits in his Swamp Rat rail. I vividly remember two things from that event: the large array of all sorts of drag cars and standing just upstream from the starting gate and getting physically knocked back from the track as the dragsters screamed past. Along with years of photographing RX7s, I have no doubt that this weekend played a large part in my current lack of hearing!

Among the cars J. D. Stacy backed at Daytona in February 1982 were the No. 2 Buick of Joe Ruttman, the Ni. 71 Buick of Dave Marcis, the Ni.28 pole winning Pontiac of Benny Parsons, the Ni. 44 Buick of Terry Labonte, the No. 90 Ford of Jody Ridley and the No. 5 Buick of Jim Sauter.

As is sometimes the case in mysteriously super-funded motorsport teams, this would-be NASCAR empire collapsed under shady financial deals and unpaid debt, with Stacy eventually disappearing from NASCAR after the 1983 season.
