PLYMOUTH! How I love you. Thank you for selling out my first headline show and thank you for asking me to sign your chip forks and thank you for perfectly illustrating that:
1) The West Country is the best place in the world.
2) The Wild Rover goes so hard every. single. time.
3) The sight of a crowd smiling and laughing and dancing to live music, which we’ve been doing since the dawn of time, is something that AI can never replace.

My debut EP is out now! EVERY CLOUD 4EVA. 🌥️

It’s been such a busy last Saturday for

BATHING PLACES

So many terrific conversations about networks, infrastructures and the liquid bodies that sustain them

Come along tonight from 5pm to raise a glass with us before we head over to @plymartscinema for tonight’s screening at 8pm

And if you’re passing by our windows, or if you’re with a friend behind your screen, follow Jem Noble @netherworldauto down the QR plughole. THE ORTHOGON is an interdimensional bathing parasite, both sacred and profane, relaying a proposition between worlds

With a couple more days to dive into Bathing Places, we’ve been immersing ourselves in the exhibition’s wonderful sound works:

Aileen Olgilvie @ails_ceol THE THING IS…THE SEA WILL ALWAYS WIN
A sound piece responding to the shifting swimscape of the Golspie Mermaids and the fragile relationship between body, land, and sea on Scotland’s north-east coast

Lara Band @_laraband ABOVE BELOW WITH
Heading south, passing Cawsand and then Kingsand, seeing how far I can get before I have to return for the last ferry…

Kate Paxman @katepaxman GREEN WORLD
Exploring the transformation of coastal habitats by warming and expanding seas to imagine a near future where lands and waters are continually in rapid flux

*Bathing Places* FINAL WEEK & Closing Party

We're open tomorrow and Saturday.

Closing party from 5 on Saturday and then off to @plymartscinema for our film night.

Featured:
Mauve Loch (detail) @connieliebschner_art
Connie is a Glasgow-based artist inspired by the shifting qualities of the Scottish landscape and experiences at the water's edge, using translucent layers of gesso, inks, and acrylics too evoke depth, texture and atmosphere. She is a founding member of @g20collective_artists

Untitled (detail) Phil Smith
Phil is an artist, performance-maker, writer and researcher, and one half of Crab & Bee. For Bathing Places, Phil evokes the Livingstone Road Baths, Foleshill, Coventry, where he learned to swim. Dettol from the footbath beneath the collage brings a Proustian note to the assemblage.

Trial By Water (detail) @elisamargot_
Elisa Margot Winters is an Estonian/American artist based in Plymouth who works with ancient traditions: alchemy, folklore, mythology. In trial by water she draws on witch trials where the infamous "swimming test" was just to judge innocence. by @37looestreet

Next month! Battle of the Dying of the Light runs at @37looestreet - an epic war fought for the remains of the last whale.

It’s an art exhibition that’s actually a piece of durational theatre. There will be noteworthy moments throughout, worth coming to see, teased here in the schedule. So pleased to be working with so many wonderful practitioners of all sorts on this, a recklessly ambitious project I’m excited to share.

I’ll be doing lots more posting about this so bear with, and hope to see you for some of the events.

JOIN US AT THE BUREAU FOR A LUNCHTIME BITE

Start your week with us in the Bureau for our new series, Bureau Bites. These informal, 45min online gatherings are open to all, whether you’re a postgraduate student, a heritage manager or a senior consultant. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn account (link in bio) where we’ll post a link to a short text (30 min read) the week before we meet. We understand how dynamic, energetic and enterprising (ie busy) we all are so please join the conversation even you haven’t been able to make time to read and reflect in advance. Readings will be a mix of websites, blogs, reports, excerpts from academic papers.

The aim is to reconnect us with our communities of practice and to create space for the kind of thinking we might not be able to do on the daily grind. We invite participants to start a light-touch reflective journal to help document these conversations, which you may find useful in your work.

✨Monday, 12 October: Does heritage really matter?

✨Monday, 9 November: When loss is more!

✨Monday, 7 December: Beyond engagement? Art, heritage and placemaking

✨Monday, 11 January: Strategies, frameworks and plans – why have them?

✨Monday, 8 February: Nothing ages faster than the future

✨Monday, 8 March: Place, landscape and more-than-human interventions

✨Monday, 5 April: ‘No, I don’t want to do workshops with NEETs!’ Beyond instrumentalising heritage

✨Monday, 10 May: Not another toolkit! Working with creative approaches to unblock cross-sector heritage research, management and policy

These gatherings also mark the start of ButCH’s journey towards being a business partnership and soft launch of our redesigned website (still in progress)

*Bathing Places*

We're open today - Fri 18th - and next Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11-5. Last chance to see these beautiful works.

Saturday 26th we'll be closing at 5 and then having a closing drink before heading to Plymouth Arts Cinema for a showing of all the films in the show. Come by and say hi.

Featured: Trochiad 2 (detail). @cass.prints.water. Cass Bisco works across printmaking and photography, finding the point where documentation becomes sensation, memory, experience. Cass's work is informed by immersion in water and landscape. In Bathing Places, Cass is showing a body of work exploring Llyn Idwal, a mountain lake in Eryri (Snowdonia).

Pools of the Apocalypse (detail) @memphishennessy
Sadie Hennesey is a multi-disciplinary artist whose roots lie in collage, but whose drift into site-specific work includes collectives of beasts and masked beauty pageants. Through a dark prism of melancholia, muddled by humour, Sadie reveals truths through juxtaposition, metaphor, masking, and collaboration. Cultural tropes become exposes. Dark underbellies are illuminated and made into collectible kitsch.

Technofossil. @erikac_art Erika Cann's sculptural practice playfully explores the relationship between bodies and geologies, drawing on her experience as a rock country and sea swimmer and from stories gathered in the landscape to create folkloric narratives of the deep-time future. by @37looestreet
