Venezuelan sunrise 🌅 This is the second 8x8 piece I have on display at Binders, and it’s one of the most personal works I’ve created this year. ☀️💛 When I first learned that the exhibition’s theme was “Solara: Return to the Light,” my mind immediately went to the sun. I started brainstorming ideas around sun deities and mythical creatures, but then I remembered something much closer to home. I grew up in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where one of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the Monumento al Sol Naciente (Monument to the Rising Sun) by Venezuelan kinetic artist Carlos Cruz Diez. Its vibrant colors and optical effects have fascinated me since I was a child, and they became the inspiration for this piece. ☀️🇻🇪 I’ve always been fascinated by Cruz Diez’s work and the way his use of color creates the illusion of movement. Reinterpreting that feeling in my own style was definitely a challenge, but it was also one of the most rewarding parts of creating this painting. 🎨 Lately, I’ve been making a conscious effort to reconnect with my roots and celebrate the place that shaped me. This piece became a small tribute to my hometown and to one of the artists who unknowingly inspired me growing up. 💙 If you’re in the Atlanta area, you can see this piece in person at @bindersart in Buckhead ( @404foundatl ) as part of the Solara: Return to the Light exhibition. The exhibition will be on view through September 3, and I’d love to know what you think if you get a chance to see it! ☀️💙 • • • #VenezuelanArtist #CarlosCruzDiez #KineticArt #AtlantaArtist #ContemporaryArt by @404foundatl
🦀Feelin’ Crabby🦀 This is the 2nd piece I made for the @404foundatl exhibition that’s currently on view over at @bindersart until August 1st 🌊 “Feelin’ Crabby” Mixed media on wood 4 layers of wood 8”x8”x1” Even though we bought a laser machine months ago, I still can’t pull myself away from cutting wood on my scroll saw. The little crab was a pain to cutout but I absolutely love getting in the zone, blasting music & locking in 💪🏼 I hope everyone has a great week! 😘 🏁www.KandusJohnsonArt.com🏁 by @404foundatl

This piece took me completely out of my comfort zone… and I’m so glad it did. ✨🎨 I went through so many sketches before landing on a concept I actually liked. Nothing felt quite right. Everything seemed too simple, and I just wasn’t connecting with any of the ideas. 😭 Whenever I get stuck, I love looking at illustrations that are completely different from my own style. It’s one of my favorite ways to find inspiration without copying. 💡 This time, I came across a color palette that immediately caught my attention, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how it would look in my own work. 🎨 That one decision completely changed the direction of this piece. Even though the concept started digitally, I always knew it would become a traditional painting for this exhibition. Recreating those bold colors, deep blacks, and vibrant linework with paint was definitely a challenge, but seeing everything come together made it so worth it. 🖤✨ I think that’s one of the things I love most about creating. Sometimes all it takes is one small experiment to unlock an idea you never would have found otherwise. 🌱💙 This piece, along with another 8x8 painting, is currently on display at Binders in Buckhead! 🖼️ If you’re in the Atlanta area, I hope you’ll stop by, explore the exhibit, and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your thoughts! 😊💛 • • • #mixedmediaart #contemporaryart #artistsoninstagram #atlantaartist #creativeprocess by @404foundatl
