Venezuelan sunrise 🌅
This is the second 8x8 piece I have on display at Binders, and it’s one of the most personal works I’ve created this year. ☀️💛
When I first learned that the exhibition’s theme was “Solara: Return to the Light,” my mind immediately went to the sun. I started brainstorming ideas around sun deities and mythical creatures, but then I remembered something much closer to home.
I grew up in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where one of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the Monumento al Sol Naciente (Monument to the Rising Sun) by Venezuelan kinetic artist Carlos Cruz Diez. Its vibrant colors and optical effects have fascinated me since I was a child, and they became the inspiration for this piece. ☀️🇻🇪
I’ve always been fascinated by Cruz Diez’s work and the way his use of color creates the illusion of movement. Reinterpreting that feeling in my own style was definitely a challenge, but it was also one of the most rewarding parts of creating this painting. 🎨
Lately, I’ve been making a conscious effort to reconnect with my roots and celebrate the place that shaped me. This piece became a small tribute to my hometown and to one of the artists who unknowingly inspired me growing up. 💙
If you’re in the Atlanta area, you can see this piece in person at @bindersart in Buckhead ( @404foundatl ) as part of the Solara: Return to the Light exhibition. The exhibition will be on view through September 3, and I’d love to know what you think if you get a chance to see it! ☀️💙
