It blows my mind to think of all the creative and positive juices we generate week after week on this Awabakal and Worimi land, with community and sustainability front of mind.

As we move through this week together, we’re reminded how important these spaces are — places to gather, to breathe, to connect, and to look out for each another ❤️

To our residents, our artists, our stallholders, our volunteers and our community, you shined bright last Friday night…. We see you and we thank you.

Meet the artists: Kara Wood

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

For International Women’s Day this year, we invited women working across curating, gallery direction and business to contribute questions for four special interviews with women artists at The Creator Incubator. Kara Wood was one of those artists, and we’re delighted to have her join us for Year One.

If you haven’t seen Kara’s interview yet, it’s definitely worth a watch. You’ll find it through the featured artist interviews link in our bio.

Arts in Recovery (AiR)

The Creator Incubator is pleased to present Bounceback 2026, an annual exhibition celebrating the creative participants of the Arts in Recovery (AiR) program.

For more than 16 years, AiR has provided a welcoming space for people to come together, make art, share experiences, and build connections through creativity. The program continues to bring people from across the community together, creating opportunities for self-expression, learning, and mutual support.

The works featured in this exhibition reflect the individuality, imagination, and lived experiences of the participating artists. Each piece offers a glimpse into an individual creative journey and highlights the positive role art can play in wellbeing and recovery.

AiR remains entirely volunteer-run, with workshops and exhibition opportunities provided free of charge. Proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists.

Bounceback 2026 is an opportunity to celebrate creativity, community, and the people who make both possible. We invite you to explore the exhibition, meet the artists, and enjoy the diverse range of works on display.

Meet the artists: Braddon Snape

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

Braddon Snape’s contribution reaches well beyond his own sculpture practice. In 2017, he founded The Creator Incubator with five artists, establishing an independent space that now houses more than 55 artists, designers and makers. Through working studios, exhibitions and open studio events, he has helped create opportunities for artists at different stages of their careers - this commitment to supporting the arts from the ground up is a big part of why we’re celebrating Braddon in Year One.

A beautiful show at @thecreatorincubator.

LUX EX MACHINA by Phil McGrath takes old, obsolete and forgotten machines and gives them an entirely new life.

Blowtorches, hand pumps, bicycle parts, hydraulics, gramophones and other salvaged objects are transformed into wonderfully inventive, functional lamps. There’s something really satisfying about seeing these discarded pieces brought back together with such care, humour and imagination.

Opening tonight, Saturday 26 September at 6pm.

Well worth getting along to see this one in person, getting to talk with Phil about what these sculpture are made from is a real treat. The closer you look at these lights the more you see.

In his solo exhibition ‘Lux ex Machina,’ local artist and tinkerer Philip McGrath (@mcgrath6062) breathes new life (and light) into the lost, obsolete, and derelict machines of the 20th century, weaving the disparate components into distinctly fresh configurations.
Through his singular collection of balance-arm lamps, McGrath deftly combines the rough and raw practicality of industrial technology with the domestic and incidental devices of the previous-century home. Fusing the unapologetically functional with the expressively aesthetic, the ‘Lux ex Machina’ exhibition will further illuminate appreciation of outdated and discarded tools, tech, and mechanisms. What was once forgotten isn’t lost forever, and will shine once more.
