PETER TILLEY

“While thinking about the context for works in the exhibition ‘About the House’ I realised, up to the present time I had resided in 18 different houses. I think this fact alone provided me with a lot of material to work with.

For the most part, the found objects I have collected over time and used here, could be seen ‘about the house’ and would be familiar to people. In spite of their everyday materiality and utility, their placement and juxtaposition enables them to also have a symbolic meaning that characterises quotidian details ‘about the house’. Meaning, some items are imbued with a certain form, size, hue, texture or associations and history that suit my purpose in illustrating aspects of the many households I have occupied. A physical manifestation of the personal through the use of those found objects.

The plinth mounted sculptures and the framed works relate to direct personal experience, and, at the same time they may have some sense of the familiar for others. Maybe, even a quest for meaning in the context of a personal journey with many different life choices and outcomes.

In essence, I am looking back over a lifetime’s accommodation in various houses and homes, and how they have been part of shaping who I am.”

LAURA BISHOP

In this ambitious exhibition, Laura’s (@laurabishopstudio) large-scale sculptures transform the industrial setting of TCI’s Big Space into a domestic cathedral. Continuing her exploration of interior space, the intersection of textiles and architecture, the home and the house, a series of vast works use scale to question the paradoxical nature of home as both a deeply felt human experience and a fragile construct.

Using a palette of satin, concrete, brass and glass, Laura’s sculptures engage with materials to investigate the power dynamics inherent in interior space, as well as the routines, rituals, social interactions and objects that signify home and tie us to place, within architectural forms that we seldom control.

This show is going to be wonderful.

A little behind-the-scenes look inside the studios of Jacquie Garcia and Alessia Sakoff at The Creator Incubator on Clyde Street, as they prepare for their upcoming exhibition, UNDERSTOREY, at LEDA Gallery.

Inspired by the often-overlooked world beneath the bushland canopy, their exhibition explores the textures, forms and quiet details of the natural environment.

Meet the artists: Moj Habibi

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

Dr Mojgan Habibi is an Iranian-Australian conceptual artist whose practice spans ceramics, sculpture and installation, exploring identity, memory, resilience and cultural connection.

THE NOVOCASTRIAN: YEAR ONE
Meet the artists: Jacquie Garcia

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

Jacquie Garcia is the artist behind Leiluca Ceramics, working from her studio at The Creator Incubator. Her practice moves between ceramics and painting, drawing inspiration from the natural environment and her emotional connection to it.

For International Women’s Day this year, Jacquie was one of four artists we interviewed at The Creator Incubator, answering questions contributed by women working across curating, gallery direction and business.

Jacquie also has an exhibition coming up at LEDA Gallery. Understorey, alongside Alessia Sakoff, opens on Saturday 24 October and runs until 5 November. Another great opportunity to experience her work before Year One.

Arts in Recovery (AiR)

The Creator Incubator is pleased to present Bounceback 2026, an annual exhibition celebrating the creative participants of the Arts in Recovery (AiR) program.

For more than 16 years, AiR has provided a welcoming space for people to come together, make art, share experiences, and build connections through creativity. The program continues to bring people from across the community together, creating opportunities for self-expression, learning, and mutual support.

The works featured in this exhibition reflect the individuality, imagination, and lived experiences of the participating artists. Each piece offers a glimpse into an individual creative journey and highlights the positive role art can play in wellbeing and recovery.

AiR remains entirely volunteer-run, with workshops and exhibition opportunities provided free of charge. Proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists.

Bounceback 2026 is an opportunity to celebrate creativity, community, and the people who make both possible. We invite you to explore the exhibition, meet the artists, and enjoy the diverse range of works on display.

THE NOVOCASTRIAN: YEAR ONE
Meet the artists: Braddon Snape

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

Braddon Snape’s contribution reaches well beyond his own sculpture practice. In 2017, he founded The Creator Incubator with five artists, establishing an independent space that now houses more than 55 artists, designers and makers. Through working studios, exhibitions and open studio events, he has helped create opportunities for artists at different stages of their careers - this commitment to supporting the arts from the ground up is a big part of why we’re celebrating Braddon in Year One.

A beautiful show at @thecreatorincubator.

LUX EX MACHINA by Phil McGrath takes old, obsolete and forgotten machines and gives them an entirely new life.

Blowtorches, hand pumps, bicycle parts, hydraulics, gramophones and other salvaged objects are transformed into wonderfully inventive, functional lamps. There’s something really satisfying about seeing these discarded pieces brought back together with such care, humour and imagination.

Opening tonight, Saturday 26 September at 6pm.

Well worth getting along to see this one in person, getting to talk with Phil about what these sculpture are made from is a real treat. The closer you look at these lights the more you see.
