Backyard chickens to farm life 🙌
Feathers, friends & flowers 🦃🐓🐔💐
📖 Guide to raising turkeys ⬇️

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Tired of city life and burned out on my job, fifteen years ago my husband and I bought 4.5 acres in the country, packed up our five backyard chickens and started down a new path to a more fulfilling life than I could ever have imagined. I’m so glad we took that first step years ago because look where we are today! I want to encourage anyone thinking about making the change to country life not to wait too long, because an immensely rewarding life is waiting for you. But it’s so important to do your research before diving in, because being prepared can make the difference between a positive experience or one that leaves you disappointed. My new book “A Beginner’s Guide to Homesteading; Practical Advice for a Self-Sufficient County Life” is available for pre-order now at Sawdust Publishing at a special lower price through the end of October. Scan the QR code on the cover at the end or go to Sawdust Publishing. Books ship in November.
📖
In this book you will learn how to:
• Research rural property before buying
• Identify environmental constraints
• Design a garden that’s right for you
• Prepare for raising poultry and livestock
• Meet the seasonal challenges of nature
📖
I also discuss how to afford the homestead lifestyle as well as the effect that moving to the country can have on one’s emotional well-being. I’ve included lessons from homesteaders across the country to provide real-world insight into this challenging but very rewarding way of life. Filled with my personal anecdotes and 5R Farm photos, this book is an enjoyable read even if you are not planning on running off to the country - although after reading this book you just might want to!

How to build a turkey shelter they will use! We experimented with several designs, and after building this tall open-sided barn we finally have a structure that everyone sleeps under instead of on top of! 🙌
🦃
It’s #TurkeySnoodSunday and I hope you’ll share your turkeys with me! Use the hashtag and mention that you are playing along with me and I’ll share features on my Instagram account on Monday.
🦃 Here’s the barn design details ⬇️⬇️
🦃 Dimensions: 24 feet wide x 16 feet deep
🦃 Roof: 12 feet high in front, 10 in back
🦃 Roost height: 4 feet to 7 feet high, plus one 2 foot high roost for older or larger birds
🦃 Roost length: 6 roosting bars totaling approx. 40 linear feet
🦃 Roost material: 2x4’s laid flat on the wide side. Also one low roost made from a split log
🦃 Floor: dirt, and I cover it with coarse wood shavings in the winter
🦃 Walls: partially sided, partially covered with hardware cloth
🦃
Predator protection is very important to me so we use electric poultry netting with easy to move step-in posts around the entire turkey yard, and yes they stay inside the fence 99% of the time. You just have to give them everything they could need or want inside the fence so they won’t want to leave.😉
🦃
Got questions? Ask me! I love talking about turkeys!

Get a clue, Buddy! Dora and her daughters are getting a little tired of Buddy following them around. He’s the third wheel but he just won’t take the hint! 😂

Trick or treat? 🎃 Who would’ve thought a pumpkin treat would be so suspicious to the turkeys! The turkeys will not be getting a pumpkin to carve this year, but maybe the chickens will. Truth be told most of my flock has always viewed pumpkins very suspiciously.
👀🎃
I just posted a new blog on my website “Take the First Step” I’ll share the link in my stories or you can go to my website at 5Rfarm.com. It’s been a year since my last blog post so if you’re wondering what happened to my blog, it’s been quite a year 😂 but I’m finally getting back to it!

There are no repeats in life, so live every moment to the fullest and don’t worry about always trying to capture the perfect photo or video. The memories we make are what’s truly important. Since my dad died last year I’ve spent more time with my mom than ever before. We get together every week, sometimes several times a week. Mom spent the day on the farm yesterday helping me in the garden and the kitchen, trying to feed the chickens leftover pancakes (they were not fans! 😂) and meeting Mango. 🐱 The videos and pictures are B roll at best, but the memories are perfect.

When other people were starting their fall vegetables, I was adding more flowers to the bare spots in my garden. Giant marigold, sunflowers, and zinnia all add structure, color and late season interest to the garden. By this time in the season I’m getting garden burnout so adding a few pretty flowers that I can just enjoy and don’t make more work for me is pretty brilliant if you ask me! Save this post to help you remember to plant more flowers next year!

Guess what I made! After getting burned out on all my favorite ways to preserve tomatoes, I decided to try something new so I made tomato paste and I’m so glad I did! It smells amazing and I know it will be delicious in all kinds of recipes. I also made hot sauce for the first time this year which was super quick and easy and turned out great!
🧑‍🍳
If you’re looking for some inspiration and ideas to try something new, take a look at the FREE resource ➡️ created by @urbanharvestcollective. How do you know your turkey is angry?? He turns into a giant potato and starts trash talking you with the fighting purr 🎶 and ARROOO sound (that’s the turkey F-bomb) 🤣 He’s really mad, but he’s totally adorable!
🦃
It’s #TurkeySnoodSunday and I would love to see your turkeys today! If you post them on Instagram using the hashtag and mention that you are playing along with me I’ll share your photo in my features post on Monday.

P.S. For all you Ringo fans out there this is a flashback to my best buddy. I still miss him every day. 🌈✨
