This is what small-group Antarctica looks like 😉💙

You wake up already surrounded by ice.

Meredian’s transformation is entering a new phase 🚀

🚢 With much of the dismantling work now complete, the focus has shifted to the vessel’s structural rebuild. New reinforcements are being installed to form the foundation for everything that comes next—from the new accommodations to the modular interiors that will soon begin taking shape.

Despite one of the rainiest Julys on record in southern Chile, work at @asenavastilleros continues to move forward. @davidcuetocollao, Meredian’s Project Manager and 1st Mate during expedition seasons, shares an update on where the project stands today 😏

Meredian’s transformation continues in dry dock at ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Chile 🇨🇱⚓

👷‍♂️ With the vessel now safely out of the water, work continues on one of the most demanding phases of the refit. While older spaces are still being dismantled, engineering teams are simultaneously developing the new structures, accommodations, and technical systems that will define the next chapter of the ship.

David Cuello, Meredian’s Project Manager and 1st Mate during expedition seasons, shares an update from the shipyard—including a first look at one of the details we're especially excited about: part of the new Antarctic library that will welcome guests into the vessel's new lounge 📚

⛵ Part of the 60 South Story started nearly 35 years ago, when co-founder Laura Smith started sailing. Like many around the world, she started by learning on an Optimist, a bath tub like boat with a sail stuck in the middle – a stable simple sailboat to learn on.

Her local sailing club, the Deep Creek Lake Sailing Association at Turkey Neck, started summer sailing camps in the early 90’s and Laura participated in the first their few summers 🌤

She always remembers: Monday morning would start with a capsize drill – so all students would roller their boat over in the water (with the students in the water as well) and then practice righting the boat and getting back in. She always hated the idea but then loved the actual exercise. She also got some experience Saling lasers during her weeks as well.

🙌 This past August Laura got the opportunity to go back to the club and give a talk to current members about the exciting science that 60 South is doing. She spoke about otters in Isla de los Estados, and shared the video about their work last year carrying a machine to mesaure carbon dioxide in the Southern Ocean. She also described their support of research looking at whale populations and explained the 60 South Citizen science Program.

With about 30 in the audience, there were plenty of questions after her talk. Most exiting though was in the audience was Ted Rissell who helped found the sailing school and Kevin Rissell who was her sailing instructor in the early 90’s!

The night was enjoyed by all and she’s hoping to go back next year to share more stories 💙

Before a new expedition boat joins the operation, it has to be properly tested 🚤

@davidcuetocollao takes us behind the scenes in Valdivia, where the team is testing one of the new semi-rigid boats that will be carried aboard Meredian.

The vessel will operate with a versatile fleet of small boats, including two semi-rigid boats, two inflatables and the landing craft — each serving a different role during expedition operations.

With a new boat, new engine and new equipment, every component needs to be checked carefully to make sure it performs as expected and meets our operational requirements.

It may not be the most visible part of an expedition, but this kind of preparation is an essential part of getting Meredian ready for the season ahead. ⚓❄️

A great day on the water in Valdivia. ⛵🇨🇱

On September 5, 60 South joined forces with @clubnauticovaldivia to organise a local sailing regatta, bringing together 27 boats and around 60 sailors, friends and family members.

😎 Although it was still winter in southern Chile, the weather gave us a welcome break: clear skies and good wind made for an excellent day of racing — with conditions that proved challenging at times, but rewarding for everyone involved.

After the racing, the day continued ashore with food, a barbecue and plenty of time to share stories and enjoy the sailing community together.

60 South was also happy to contribute equipment and donations to the club as part of our support for local sailing in Valdivia.

Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day happen. We hope this is the first of many more days on the water together. ⚓

Antarctica – the most beautiful encounters 🐧

Earlier this year I spent 14 on the Antarctic Peninsula. No phone signal, no roads, no trees. Just ice, penguins and landscapes I had never seen before.

I still go through these photos and can’t quite believe I was there. Which one would you hang on your wall? 👇

🚢🐧 Hans Hansson is currently in South Georgia with our first expedition of the season: a ski-focused journey exploring remote landscapes, long days outside, and the rhythm of life aboard a small vessel.

The group is expected to return on October 10, and we wanted to share a few moments from the trip so far. After months of planning and preparation, it feels good to see Hans Hansson back in the Southern Ocean and the new season beginning where it belongs: out in the field 😏

👷🛳 While work continues throughout the vessel, routine checks and maintenance remain part of the process. These images capture a recent periodic check in the engine room, helping ensure the machinery continues to operate as it should.

At the same time, work on the new interiors is moving forward, with flooring and insulation well advanced and preparations underway for the installation of the interior walls.

💪 Different teams, different tasks, all moving Meredian one step closer to her next Antarctic season.

For the second time, 60 South was proud to be part of the @expeditioncruisenetwork in London! 🌍🐧

We had the pleasure of meeting new delegates and sharing experiences with highly experienced professionals from the expedition travel industry, all brought together by a shared passion for adventure and exploration.

Easy to recognise, and even easier to remember 🐧

💙 Chinstrap penguins get their name from the thin line of black feathers running beneath their chin — as if someone had carefully drawn it from ear to ear.

On many of our Antarctic expeditions, we have the chance to observe chinstrap colonies along the Peninsula and surrounding islands, where they gather on rocky, ice-free slopes during the breeding season 😉
