Antarctica.
A continent 99% of people will never see 🌍

Around 120,000 people visit Antarctica in a season. That sounds like a lot until you remember there are 8 billion of us. Almost all of them go to the same place: the Antarctic Peninsula.

I am so thankful to have been lucky enough to be one of them this year. No photo really captures the silence. These come closest.

Is Antarctica on your bucket list? Yes or no 👇

Antarctica – the most beautiful encounters 🐧

Earlier this year I spent 14 on the Antarctic Peninsula. No phone signal, no roads, no trees. Just ice, penguins and landscapes I had never seen before.

I still go through these photos and can’t quite believe I was there. Which one would you hang on your wall? 👇

- Iceberg Graveyard - Pleneau Bay in Antartica collects icebergs as they calve into the sheltered waters from surrounding glaciers. The morning was a bit of a scramble to find a proper composition among the ice and slick rocks during the colorful light as clouds quickly enveloped the view. While not the best images I had in mind, the fine memories live on. A spectacular place at the tip of our world. This may be the last of my Antarctica shots unless a hidden gem emerges from the hard drive.

- Port Lockroy Seascapes - On the verge of another heat wave in New England, some cool and refreshing memories from Antarctica this past February. A balmy 34 degrees and windless conditions. The Seven Sisters mountains can be seen in the distance, first traversed in as recent as 2014. Port Lockroy is a stop for many visitors to the region, as it is the site of a British Research outpost and the site of the most southerly Post Office. A great place for penguins sightings, as they roam Goudier Island freely.

- Convergence - Light and shadows create some beautiful lines among the glaciers and icebergs of Antarctica. A seabird added a touch of scale to the massive ice that I wasn't aware of until I processed and zoomed in a bit. The juxtaposition and lighting was fleeting as our boat moved by. This was shot at 500 mm.

- Shadow Lands - Slowly working through the rest of my Antarctica files. A mix of light and shadows on the largely icy landscape, revealing majestic peaks and sweeping ice fields. Smaller, equally amazing landscapes that are part of a much more grand panorama. Unforgettable vistas, most taken with a long zoom that allowed me to get in tight to some of the smaller details that can be overwhelmed by the initial view.

- Ice Portal - A stunning cove just after sunrise, backed by an arched portal to the ice world beyond. Antarctic bays are vast, and can be filled with these landscapes within landscapes. A discovery around every turn in the Zodiac.

Land of Light & Shadows - Antarctica is largely a landscape of light and shadows, devoid of colorful vistas that you might find in Iceland, despite it's name. While sunrise or sunset might give a splash of color, most of the day consists of shades of blue and white as snowy shadows give way to brilliant whites as ridglines and glaciers dance with the clouds. This group of images was particularly dramatic with the swirling clouds and imposing peaks and Icebergs. The juxtaposition of elements moved quickly as we approached the constantly changing views.
