This is the story of 712 F80.

I started the 712 WAGEN account back in 2021 with the intent of sharing more car content while I was preparing to purchase an F80 to go with my E36 and E92. In June of 2022 I purchased that F80, a 2018 M3 in Alpine White to match its older siblings already in the garage.

Less than two months later a Toyota 4Runner driver decided to attempt a blind turn through a terribly designed Atlanta intersection at the exact moment I was traveling straight through it, and at only 25mph the collision caved in my front left suspension and ripped through the front fender, both doors, and rear fender. The 4Runner was determined to be at fault on the scene. I packed up my belongings in a paper bag, the car was loaded onto a tow truck and taken to an impound lot, and I walked home. The 4Runner driver was able to drive off only missing a front bumper.

It looks totaled, right? Apparently wrong. The insurance-accredited collision shop I brought it to placed the initial estimate at only $15,000, the estimate was approved, and they started working. What resulted was a grueling 16 month back and forth battle with the insurance company, the collision shop, and any contracted shops hired out to work on the vehicle. I spent hours every week ensuring progress was being made and insurance was paying for everything. For over a year I effectively had a part time job managing what had become a massive rebuild. When I finally received the finished vehicle in December 2023, the repair bill had reached $55,000.

Without the F80 I was back to daily driving my E92 and the extra mileage led to a blown throttle body actuator before I could preventatively replace it, leaving the car in limp mode until I could send it out for repair. Now we’re down to just the E36. While the F80 was being welded back together and the E92 was in the shop my E36’s original 1994 fuel pump decided to give out and the car sputtered to a halt. I packed up my belongings, put another M3 on a tow truck, and walked home again. From 3 M3s down to 0. by @712wagen
