‘O Pō ka inoa
he papa ku’i ‘ai
‘O ‘ulu ka lā’au
mai ‘Olomana mai
‘O Waimea ke kū’ono
i kū i ke kai
I nā Ko’olau nō
e hānai mai i ku’u ‘ohana me a’u

Pō is the name
a poi-pounding board
‘Ulu is the wood
from ‘Olomana
Waimea is the bay
(where) it soaked in the sea
In the Ko’olaus
(It will) feed my ‘ohana and me

Mahalo to braddah Ryan, my mentor on this journey of board & stone. It began over a year ago when I was doing some much needed tree trimming work. One particular ‘ulu tree I selected to take down so it’s neighbors could grow. We harvested that ‘ulu wood and began the process of making papa ku’i ‘ai. ‘Ulu is strong in my ancestry (Makekau), and crafting from ‘ulu just felt like the right thing to do. The wood was planed and then set up to cure for one year.

Once cured and ready for shaping, Ryan helped me rough cut my papa. I had the chance to do most of the shaping by hand with ko’i, lots of family time with my wahine and my keiki spent working on this papa. Shavings are all over from Waimānalo to ‘Olomana to Malaekahana to Kahuku. I pau the finish sanding and oiled it. We took it for blessing and naming at Waimea Bay with my three middle kiddos. They experienced Waimea for the first time and learned how to jump the rock & I learned how to soak & bless a board. It was a beautiful day of ‘ohana (just missing my hiapo who was on a plane to Tahiti and my muli who I will visit in a few weeks).

This papa ku’i ‘ai is named for my line, Pō, of Sam Pō or Samuel Mainaaupo. It’s a name from our kūpuna, and just like I was hānai or fed/raised by a long line of Pōs, this Pō will continue to hānai or feed my ‘ohana for generations to come. My hope for this papa is that it is an heirloom that stays in my ‘ohana and brings many good things and blessings to my keiki and the following generations. Next up, we making our pōhaku. Stay tuned for the next updates on this journey with Hāloa. by @808statellc

Congratulations to my first born! You did it! I can’t put into words how proud of you I am! Wow how time flies from you being a little girl to growing into the accomplished wahine you are becoming. I have so much to be grateful for and I am blessed to have you in my life. It was a huge treat for you to choose to do your bachelors here at UH Mānoa, and we are so lucky that you are staying to do your Masters. Hawai’i is your one hānau and it was too long without you. I am so proud of you my beautiful, smart, loving, funny, hardworking hiapo. All of your Papa’s are looking down with pride at your hardwork and accomplishments. And I am extremely proud at all of your efforts to connect to our culture and language , you make the lāhui proud too. Love you my #1 ❤️❤️ by @808statellc

The last week was spent in WA with my youngest son Easton, who just made 7 yo in January. We ate, we colored, we played, we painted. He made sure I was watching him ATV, swing, drag the arena, and drive the side by side. It was MAGIC and I will treasure this time with him. There was a lot that had to happened to be able to see and hug my boy in-person. It hasn’t been easy, but I really do have the court to thank for being able to be with him. I just want to also thank all the people who have shown me aloha and support in the last few years. I’ve had a lot of challenges to overcome and it feels so sweet to get to have all of my beautiful children in my life. I can’t wait to see him again, there is a big pit in my stomach without him and I am just grateful to be able to have him in my life. by @808statellc
