Full disclosure- I experienced a ton of anxiety approaching my five year anniversary.

I figured I was processing that it is the longest romantic relationship I’ve had. The closer the 12th of September drew, I knew it wasn’t fear of commitment that was causing my anxiety but pressure I put on myself to make the milestone feel as special as it was to me.

The truth is, it wouldn’t be possible to capture the magnitudes of that love in a single day.

@troyamason , you make life less scary. We’ve been through some tough shit together to say the least. You’re my best friend and my better half. You’re my biggest cheerleader and the person that holds me accountable always. You keep me from taking myself and life too seriously.

To be completely honest, the hardest part of being your girlfriend is just how damn popular you are. But I get it, you are the dopest person I know. And it’s validating to know that I don’t have bad taste.

It is a privilege to get to love and adore you. Happy 5 years my love. May there be another 50 if AI doesn’t kill us all before then. ❤️♾️ by @8six14

Circus saved my life.

Four years ago I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition. Dermatomyositis. A condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks skin and muscle tissue. I had just relocated internationally to complete a degree in circus arts. It felt like my career had been given a death sentence. I joined support groups and read about patients living in wheelchairs, patients reliant on regular antibody infusions, and even fatal cases.

I feared that this disease would rob me of my dreams. But the opposite happened. My dream saved my life. My circus training had offset the disease progression by not allowing my muscles to atrophy at the rate of a typical patient. And because I had a heightened awareness of my body, I received my diagnosis at a far earlier stage than the typical patient. Muscle atrophy begins at the core and travels outwards. Most patients investigate when they experience muscle weakness in their arms or legs. My muscle weakness never progressed that far. This meant that when I began treatment, the muscle damage was entirely reversible.

And while I navigated a 9 month-long process of finding a medication that worked for me, continuing to train gave me something to fight for. Training through that period was incredibly humbling and required an insane level of faith and patience but it saved my mental health.

When I received my diagnosis, I thought I had lost circus forever, but instead circus saved me.

I wasn’t going to make a 2024 recap, til I remembered that I almost broke my neck 3 months in, my best friend got married, I discovered a love of ❤️‍🔥, turned 30, and landed a front flip. That felt worth looking back on. Thank you to everyone who made the year special. by @8six14

For nearly two years, I avoided mirrors and pictures. My illness had me feeling like a stranger in my own body. The waves of rashes, shedding hair, weight gain… I dissociated from my physical appearance. Despite my partner’s best efforts to encourage me to love myself, to see how beautiful I remained in his eyes - I was lost in grieving my former self. The uncertainty of the future weighed me down.

To have reached the other side of that journey… to come home to myself, more resilient than ever- to have been loved fiercely when none of my clothes fit, when my hair was sticking out in wispy bits, when the brain fog rendered me dysfunctional, when it seemed I’d have a rash across my face forever — that was beautiful.
