I kept saying that @francisca_aninat’s exhibition at @92websterroad didn’t need many words, until @tom_denman_ arrived and brought some to the table. His review for @studiointernational1893 is a sensitive and intelligent appraisal of our show, and through his words Francisca’s work grows before our eyes (and memory, and heart). Thank you, Tom, for your attentive writing, and congratulations again, Francisca, on such a brilliant new body of work. 🔗 Link in bio Four Steps and a Looking Glass is closed with a golden key! ✨ by @92websterroad
On view until this Sunday, 11 October, at @92websterroad “In her solo exhibition ‘Four Steps and a Looking Glass’, Francisca Aninat presents a poetic investigation into the liminal spaces of consciousness, memory, and spatial awareness. Aninat’s starting point is the sensation of moving through pitch darkness – the kind one might experience at home, in the middle of the night. She lets vague statements resonate and, from confused attempts to recollect a path taken, memories intertwine with dreams, opening an invitation to a journey that is transformed into a spatial experience.” -Extract from the curatorial text by @ceciliavilela by @92websterroad
Across paper, fabric, metal, wood, and handcrafted photographic printing, in ‘Four Steps and a Looking Glass’, Francisca Aninat assembles, stitches, embosses, embroiders, writes, stains, and sculpts to create a series of small objects thoughtfully dispersed across the space. Inside @92websterroad’s cube, the resemblance of a doorway, window views, and a ladder whose shape fails to complete are some of the elements in a space that insists on images half formed. Something in them addresses a pre-verbal state in which ideas and matter are in formation. . Francisca Aninat treats the accumulation of matter as a metaphor for the passing of time. Labour-intensive processes such as sewing, stitching, and dyeing become markers of duration within an otherwise abstracted space that floats free of linear narratives. Her compositions convey sensations and imply processes in the making. The vagueness of her imagery, with shadows and half-shaped forms, resonates with the intuitive and the dream-like, often evoking something sensorial and subjective. . Four Steps and a Looking Glass at @92websterroad “At 92 Webster Road, new works by Aninat are placed inside the cube, on its outer layer, and in the garden. This combination calls for a crossing and signals an active search for recognition, where subtle, abstract mixed-media compositions serve as signposts and, at times, deceptive signals: ‘This is the house,’ reads a shadow somewhere.” — from the curatorial text @ceciliavilela by @92websterroad
