We spent this summer in Norberg developing the work, Vers Le Blanc, a timed activation of the spotlights at Galleri Norberg, which consist of both halogen and LED fixtures. These two systems represent two eras of museum institutional lighting, which now co-exist and at times compete within many contemporary exhibition spaces.
Halogen lamps start at a warmer hue when cool and then slowly register as “colder” as the lights heat up, revealing their own temperature with use. As the lamps heat at different speeds, their color temperatures first appear separately and gradually move towards harmony. This transition takes roughly four minutes to complete. In practice, the halogen lamps struggle to keep up with newer lighting technology.

The work is named for Vers Le Blanc (1982), an unreleased and rarely performed composition by Finnish electronic composer Kaija Saariaho (1952-2023) that highlights the sounds produced not simply by, but between two electronically produced chords — a space in which change happens “so slowly that changes of pitch become imperceptible to the ear,” per Saariaho — encouraging listeners to dial specifically into moments of transition.

We placed directional cinema microphones to amplify the acoustic activity of the lighting itself — the small clicks and creaks caused by the internal vibrations and temperature controls. Working with @hannes_ferm, these sounds became components in a tonal composition.

The first presentation of a more extensive work centered around Jennie June, an ‘androgyne’ and ‘female-impersonator’, who authored a queer autobiographical trilogy between 1890-1922. Her writings were published within the framework of medical case study and have since remained in limited circulation.

Artist highlight: Iida Jonsson and Ssi Saarinen (Visual arts)

Iida Jonsson and Ssi Saarinen are a Finnish artist duo working with film and photography. They hold MFAs from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Their past exhibitions and residencies include Pioneer Works in New York and KIN Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiruna. Together with Ona Julija Lukas Steponaitytė, they have also exhibited at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, and at Berlin Art Week Featured at Reethaus.

For Norbergfestival, they will present a new video work extending the acoustic environment of Mimer through moving images, alongside an exhibition at Galleri Norberg during the festival.

Presented as part of a residency project with support from Region Västmanland.
